Something silly and totally off the wall. You can't compete in the bucks department (nor should you try) so find something really goofy. Scour the second hand shops and thrift sales for treasures. Go for the balloon bouquet. Or a 1940 Boy Scout badge, or???
Good luck on finding just the 'right' gift!

Do other employees get him gifts? Perhaps everyone could "go in" on a gift and buy something like a case of wine.

If you want to get him something on your own:
1) If he is a wine drinker, maybe find out what he likes and buy a bottle of wine for him. You can get some "nice" bottles for about $15 depending on what kind of wine... for example Pinot Noir is very trending right now and so it's expensive.
2) Something unique perhaps from a store that specializes in art? A wine stand would be nice. (Sorry to go on with wine)
3) CDs- do you know what artist he likes?
4) Restaurant cards are nice, too.

If he is wealthy, he probably doesn't need a lot of stuff. So, if no one else is getting him a gift, I would go with a card and your best wishes.

How about having a portrait artist do his portrait (the kind at the mall, that paint from a photo) or take a photo of his yacht and enlarge it, frame it for his wall in the office?

Something unique that cant be duplicated...have a star named in his honor or adopt a stretch of highway in his name..or an experience he may have never thought of having despite the fact he is wealthy..a hot air baloon ride. If you know alot of personal information about him, do something personal like find out the name of his high school and see if you can get a t-shirt, pennant..something..those are memories..no money can buy that. He would love it.

You can't compete with his money so you have to put a little thought into it. Has he mentioned he likes dark chocolate covered almonds or a specific brand/blend of coffee? Then you can get him a little something that shows you've paid attention to his likes but you didn't try to blow your salary on him.
I know my boss doesn't sleep well, so I got her a nice ($20) throw blanket for her living room naps and she loved it.
Our President adores dogs, so I got her a great coffee table book with dogs in it.

If none of this works for you, just write him a nice card.

I would get him a nice card and maybe something for his desk. You can go to Things Remembered and have something personalized, from a cigar case, to business card holders... You're sure to find something there that he could use. They have toiletry bags for men in leather as well. It would be something practical and personal without giving away how much you spent. Get him something for golfing if he enjoys the sport (funny desktop figurine, etc).

How about a best selling book if he reads. A subscription to a favorite magazine. Offering to cook a great dinner for him and his family. A framed photo of his family for his desk. A piece of artwork of his passion for his office. Let me know if you need more ideas....Good Luck! I'm sure you'll do fine in your selection!

If he is a good boss, tell him so. If not, a card would be fine. My boss asked that we forget his birthday. He said that would be the best gift to give him!

Whether my boss is wealthy or not, I would give them the same gift...a signed card.

Bosses need not receive gifts from their subordinates. Unless, of course, you want to be viewed as an *ss-kisser by your colleagues. JMHO.

What does he give you for your birthday? If he does give you a gift and a card for your birthday, then give him a card. If he doesn't give you anything, then don't give him anything. If he doesn't wish you happy birthday, then don't wish him. I think bosses don't care too much for such things from their employees. All they want is your good work.
