YES! in the book "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser, he mentions that most of the food in MCD's has artificial flavors. These artificials are what give the burgers, nuggets, fries and shakes their "yummy" qualities (taste and smell). With out these chemicals added to these items, the food would taste very blah and you wouldnt want to go there again. Many of these chemicals come from chemical refineries along the New Jersey Turnpike, such as International Flavors and Fragrances (yes, its a real company). Inside these companies, are tiny little bottles of oddly colored flavors that have been created to mimic "real" flavors. You can take a strip of taste paper and dip it in the bottle marked "potato chips" and it tastes like a potato chip. Another marker burger, well you get the idea. All of these tiny bottles do NOT contain any real flavors what so ever. they are ALL synthetic, and with synthetic chemicals that have long, unrecognizable names...they can become addicting. Maybe just so the consumer will smell a faint waft of a fry, have a memory of sastifaction or childhood memory envoked, and wander aimlessly into the food establishment, following the smell - like on a cartoon. If that happens, the chemical companies have done their job well. Unfortunately, to many people and especially the youth of today, it can be an addiction as bad as cigarettes or alcohol. The chemicals produce cravings, like Pavlov's dogs and the bells. By the way, these companies also make scents for purfumes, floor wax, dishwashing liquids, shampoo and the like.

I don't know about now, but MacDonald's used to have a distinctive smell when they cooked their fries in lard. That was before the politically corrective activists started trying to kill us off with the trans-fats oils that they now gripe about. (FACT is: you can fry in lard and absorb very little of it if you do it right..but that's another answer waiting for the question.)

they let out all their exhaust from the kitchens, like the smell of their hamburgers and it wafts through the air and probably smells pretty good, so it would draw people there.
