I have a few long videos that i would like to upload onto either YouTube or Myspace.
the only way i know how to edit videos is by dropping each clip onto the storyboard-which is taking forever!
AND when i go to save my clip, it is taking about 30 min. to save the new clip.
Does anyone know of an easier/faster way to take my long movie and turn it into 2 or 3- 10min clips?
-preferably by using WMM

would someone mind explaining a short version on how to properly use WMM...
I have "imported into collections" several videos that i want to break up into 2/3 sections...
then i pick a video, and drag each scene into the storybook, until the main movie box shows 10min, then i select save movie file... save into my computer (and this takes an hour?)..
does that sound like i am doing it correctly?

not really.
What you are referring to is called "rendering".
Rendering takes a long time, even on a fast computer.
The only way to do it quicker is with better, more, and expensive hardware.
I frequently do video editing as a hobby and sometimes professionally. I did a video a few months ago that took 7 hours to render.

Welcome to the wonderful world of video editing. I typically only work in 10 minute increments for my clips to keep rendering time down to something that I'm willing to sit and watch. You should break up the big files into smaller files. Work with only one file/clip at a time. Trim off the rear of the clip and save. Start new and do that to the next part. Keep doing that until you break up the whole thing. Best if you capture in 10 minute clips at a time. Edit and cutting 10 minutes pieces is a lot quicker/easier than doing so with 1 hour video raw stock. Keep your screen sizes down (320X200) and your frame rate to 15fps for internet use. Smaller frames and frame rates render faster.

WMM is not the best for any type of serious editing. Your needs are small but still bigger than WMM is aimed at. I would get some other program like Ulead VideoStudio. Works much better for your needs. Cutting out clips from the middle of a long file takes minutes just to move to the section you wish to cut out. You need a very fast drive system to support the virtual memory needs of WMM. SATA and PATA (IDE) will not cut it for this purpose. You really need UltraSCSI 320 controller and drives for your system, programs, temp & swap drives.

I have a Quad XENON system with 4Gigs of memory for each processor. I have Fiber channel SCSI drives on this system. It is still painfully slow for me when I try and use more than 4 filters/effects at a time. Final rendering can still take a day to perform that the full screen sizes and 60fps.

UPDATE:

I just took a short clip and edited it with WMM V2. I found that if the audio codec used is not native to your system then it uses the closest it can find. In that case it can then be out of sync.

You do not supply what kind of specs your computer has. Speed, Memory type or amount. This has a direct relationship on the time. You did not mention what format or data rate you are trying to save the video in. Take in mind that the more that you change from one codec to another and frame size and frame rate, the more rendering time you need.

Some Basics of video:

Frame: a single image displayed on screen. For Full DVD that is 720X540 pixel image or 380K bytes of data.

Frame Rate or FPS: The number of frames displayed per second. The minimum that can be displayed that can still be precieved by the human eye as fluid is 15 fps. MPEG-2 encoding for DVD in NTSC format is 29.97FPS. Now you have 380K times 29.97 FPS equals 11.38Megabytes Per Second.
That translate to 682,754Megabytes per Minute. Which translates to 6.827540 Gigabytes for your 10 min. clip.

Video CODEC: COmpression-DECompression - This is the method/algorythm that is used to reduce the video size. This is done on a frame by frame basis. This means that your computer must look at each and every frame to apply the compression method chosen. I included a link that explains this in greater detail.

Audio CODEC: the method used to reduce the audio data portion down in size. Link also provided for greater explaination.

Choosing the right Frame Size, Rate, Video Codec, Audio Codec all effect rendering time. The amount of time it is taking your computer could be entirely normal for the parameters you have choosen and the computer hardware that you have.

The fastest/easiest way to do all this is to capture in the target format that you want the end product to be in. If you only capture in 10 minutes increments then you will not have to edit and render again as you have to now with the entire movie.

If you do not own the orginal there are other program that will split a large video file. They are not part of WMM or work with it. But if all you want to do is cut up the video these tools will do that. None of these are free. Search Download.com for "video file splitter" and you will get a big listing of those that are available.
