My boss keeps telling me to use tabs and something about the funky double candle stick looking things BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT!!... He keeps saying, you have to use tabs to line it up... how do I do this? please help!

The first poster is correct just a couple additional things if the ruler isn't visible you go to view, ruler and check it for the rulers to be visible

The small block at the left of the ruler tells you what type of tab it is left aligneed, decimal, right, centered, first line or hanging indent, the default when you open it is left, if you hold your mouse over the symbol for a couple of seconds tool tips will tell you what the tab kind is.

By default there are already left aligned tabs at the 1/2" marks, the ones you add are to have tabs elsewhere.

Open Word
Go up to the ruler at the top. just above the page you are typing.
Click in that bar and it will insert a tab at that point
Will look like a "double candlestick" in the ruler
You can slide that candlestick back and forth if you want to move the location of the tab, or add more by clicking elsewhere in the ruler
