maybe your child doesnot like messy things. my son also hates to eat his food with his hands. he did not like messy things.you can try what i tried. give your child 'playdough' to play with. it is not messy and comes in many colors. it is also good for hand movements and motor skills. you can also give your child objects of variour textures(such as, stones,leaf.cotton.water.feather)and tell him to identify them while blindfolded. maybe he will like this game.

Some kids just hate certain textures or the feeling of some things on their skin (kids who hate socks because of the seam at the toe and shirt tags fall into a similar category). Sometimes it continues into adulthood. Don't try to force him to play with those things; it will probably just freak him out and make him hate fingerpainting and those textures more. :)

I think you might be putting a bit much pressure on your kid if you think you are training some kind of meaningful life skill in fingerpainting. A three year old needs hugs, conversation, a nap and healthy food. Love. Not job training or skill building. They will grow in those things on their own if you provide their basic needs.

It sounds as if he may have some degree of sensory sensitivity disorder. Don't worry - its not as bad as it sounds! Some kids are just extra sensitive to textures and in extreme cases, even to the touch of a hand. DO NOT force him to touch anything or try anything. It literally hurts the nerve endings of his fingers/hands. What you can do is to stimulate the nerve endings beforehand so that the texture is "watered-down" so to speak. Take one shoulder in between your two palms and rub them rapidly back and forth - the same kind of motion as when you towel-dry your hair when you rub your towel between your hands. Light touches seem to be worse than harder touches when rubbing. Don't hurt him but do be somewhat rough. Work your way down the shoulder to the fingers, it should take several minutes. Then do the other arm. Then repeat with hands & fingers of both hands, rubbing the hands together. Then ask him to try touching it again - rough textures are better, such as touching the outside of a cantalope or the top of a brick rather than paint. Eventually he will feel bolder about touching things after the rubbings and will work his way up to touching paints.

your child does not have to paint to develop motor skills. I assume that's what you are asking about. Allow him to color or build with blocks. Maybe the messiness of the paint just freaks him out..nothing wrong with that. If you are still concerned call the nurse line or see the pediatrician.

at the daycare we worked with kids that have sensory issues and we did things like played with shaving cream, whipped cream and play dough. things like that and let them explore the different feelings it made a mess but it helped and the kids thought it was funny to make the mess.

everyone is different, it's no great loss if your child doesn't like fingerpaint. explore other things with your child. he/she may really love music or visual things. read to him/her, get spacial objects like blocks.

Some kids are just like that. He might be one of those kids that do not like to get their hands dirty. At three, my daughter hated sand on her feet. He will get over it at his own paste.
