screaming or crying kids in a movie theater? Why do they let this happen?

Yes, this annoys me too.

To the people responding, 'what do you expect them to do'?

We expect them not to bring a crying baby to a movie that it could not in any way enjoy. The problem isn't really that the child is crying, but that the child is there in the first place. If you're not old or mature enough to sit quiet for two hours you don't belong in a theater.

Yeah. I wonder why some parents figure it's such a treat to take kids to something that is of no interest to them at all. They'd be much better off at home with a baby sitter, and everyone else in the theatre would enjoy the performance that much more.
There are a couple of alternatives -- some theatres have 'baby matinees' when moms who don't want to park the kids with a sitter can come and join hundreds of other moms and kids in the theatre. The racket is intense, but nobody minds.
There are also some theatres that have a 'baby room' -- a soundproofed room with a glass front, so moms can watch the show in comfort without bothering anyone else if their kid crys or screams.
Why do theatre owners let this happen? Because parents buy tickets and movie revenues are down so they don't want to discourage any possible patrons. But in the long run, they are shooting themselves in the foot, because they'll lose more money on the people who WON'T come back because of the crying kids.
Who needs it, when you can rent a movie and stay home?

Why do they let this happen? Well, does it REALLY matter WHY? I think b/c it is a touche' subject---one's kids, that is. And as a parent, it is VERY frustrating to have this happen, let alone someone snapping at you about the child, making matters worse.
Yes, it is annoying, and if this happened to me while in a theatre, I would ignore it at first, then if it got worse,I would get up, find the parent or other adult w/the children, and offer to take the child out to the counter for a drink or something...or I would ask very calmly and ASSERTIVELY, if the child could be removed from disturbing my paid admission to watch this movie!
If it is a parent, I would validate for them how it is not their own fault, and that I know how frustrating it can be, but the solution must be respecting all people who paid to watch a movie, hence, removing the kid/s from that room.
I think that is real reasonable to ask, and I really think that the ushers need to be trained on this particular subject so that when the occasion does arrive, it will be rules, period, and part of the usher's job would be to guide a noisy person out until all is well. If nothing was done about it and my time there for recreation was disturbed, I would not return to the specific place again because obviously, there is not enough respect for every paying customer for me to want to return.
Also, as having been a parent for 28 years myself, I believe it is my responsibility to see that my child is not rude, nor bothering others, especially in a quiet setting. That comes back to TEACHING the children, but then in this instance of movie time, it would depend upon what the child is reacting to, how old the child is,and if the child being treated fairly or not.Thanks.

Yes. Kids screaming or crying ANYWHERE annoys the crap out of me but especially in places where people are supposed to be quiet and are trying to enjoy themselves such as a movie theater or a restaurant.

The parents that allow this behavior to continue and do not remove the children from the theater or restaurant are the ones that are raising the next serial killers, rapists, robbers, and other general scum of the Earth.

It is called DISCIPLINE people... trying using it!!

I think that if the children aren't capable of sitting quietly through a movie then they should be left at home. Babies should definately be left at home. If a parent can't get or afford a babysitter then they should wait until the movie comes out on DVD. People just don't have any consideration or common sense anymore. It's the same with cell phones at a movie theater. Either turn it off or set the ringer to vibrate and if you get a call go out in the lobby to talk.

yes this annoys me.I'm only a teen and my parents make me work for my money like doing the most tedious chores ever like scrubbing toilets. And crap like that so I bust my @ss for eight dollars or more.So I pay and go to the movies and some kid starts to whine. This happens cuz of the parents who think it's smart to drag a 5 year old to a film.Honestly how many 5 year olds will sit still and not open there trap for 2 hours.Well I mean common curisty is so hard to find now.Well like I really came to a movie to hear the kid scream.Sorry usually I'm not a mean person but this ticks me off when I watching a movie and then the child yells.Well keep this in mind whinny kids are everywhere so depends what type of film your seeing at what time you go to the movies.Example a more mature film rated 14a or R no whinny kids there. And films 14a and rated R are not such a family movie.Along with what time you go 8:00 is to late for 6 year old's.

I'm a parent and I find this very annoying myself. If my kids were not behaving then I would take them out. People that leave their misbehaved kids crying in the theatre annoy me and they are the ones that are inconsiderate of the fact that everyone else has paid for their enjoyment of that movie. They are the ones being rude. It's too bad some will never learn.

Michael is absolutely correct. Children who cannot behave should not be in a movie theater. The parents should know this. If their child does start crying, they need to quickly take them out of the theater. I started taking my daughter to children's movies once she understood that she needs to be quiet in the theater. If a child cannot understand or be reasoned with, he/she is too young to go to the movies.

I take it you don't have kids. It just happens & that's life. For some, the parent never "taught" the kids proper manners but for others kids are kids and that's just what they do.

If my kids were to do that I'd give them a chance or 2 to behave & then we would leave. If you make the threat, follow through! That's what the problem is. If a parent says "Stop it or we're going home" but they never get up & leave then the kids know that they can keep on going & they'll never get in trouble.

It's more than annoying... it's terrible. Ask the theater management why they let it happen and let them know you aren't happy. You're paying good money and have a right to complain.
