actually it's not a stupid question .
If a believer makes mistakes, and we all do, we have to offer sincere repentance to be entitled to forgiveness. In Islam, sincere repentance is known as taubah. This requires us to;
1- Recognize and admit we have made a mistake
2- Ask forgiveness from Allah and if the sin was against a person, we have to ask forgiveness from that person also
3- We try to atone for the sin we have done if possible, by for example, returning money if we had stolen it
4- We make the intention never to do the sin again
We are also advised to ‘follow a bad deed with a good deed’. This means, as soon as we realize we have done something wrong, we should immediately try to do something good.

First you have to remember that Allah is Most forgiving so he could forgive you if He pleases. And yes you would simply pray and ask forgiveness but for it to be accepted you would have to repent sincerely and try your best not to do the commit the same sin again.
Hope this helps and salaams.

eating pork is not a sin, they just consider eating a pig dirty, but it is somewhat wrong, but if u committed a sin, just pray and really beg for forgiveness. if u apologize with ur heart to Allah, u will be forgived.
~God is so forgiving and just as long as u dont take stuff from poor or continue doing that sin, that u will be okay. Dont listen to some of the other jerks who are making Islam look like a strict and compicating religon. it is as peaceful and forgiving as others.
~what a coincidence because i was just talking about forgiveness with god with my mother last night and i am a muslim too!:)

Your question is not stupid at all.
You would just pray and never do it again. There is no process, really. And in Islam, Allah is the most merciful, and if he sees genuinity in your heart, as you deeply remorse whatever sin you've committed, he will forgive you.
Also what helps is doing good deeds to counteract your sin.

Well, as you said you can pray for forgiveness, that is what most muslims do. Also you can say certain stuff to take away your sin. However if you feel ectremly guilty then some muslims could go on the journey to Haji.

3-4 conditions are requested for forgiveness:
1- To feel sincerely sorry for committing that particular sin (past).
2- To quit instantly that sin (present).
3- To take all measures not to commit that sin in the future.
Plus:
4- If that sin is directed against another person to correct the situation with him.
The holy Quran 39:53
Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

All you have to do is ask for forgiveness and hopefully try not to repeat the same mistakes you have done in the past, however, we are human - mankind is entitled to mistakes - GOD did not create us perfect!! Also, therefore GOD instituted charity as well as any good deeds, prayer etc. - GOD loves when you come to him in repentance in any religion! However, we don't know if we are forgiven or not as only GOD is the judge and we will only find out the truth on the Day of Judgement.
