I think the reason is that because of safety you should always hold on to the escalator handrail. This helps prevent getting hurt if the escalator had to stop suddenly and whilst entering and exiting the escalator. Since most people would be standing and are right-handed, that is the side they should hold on to.

If you're walking or running, you keep left all the time - stairs, tunnels, escalators.
By standing on the right of the escalator, you leave the left free for those that aren't standing - i.e. those walking or running up or down the escalator.

The system seems to work well.

It's because stairs and tunnels are 2 way and escalators are one way. You are not allowed to go the oppostie direction on an escalator so the lane that would have been for people heading towards you turns into the lane where people can stand still. The left lane doesn't change function at all. It's quite simple.

No idea, but I don't even know how most people can stay to one side of such a narrow space! Well, I think the escalator thing is because in case someone tries to run past. Don't know about the tunnels though.

you don't have to stand on either side on an escalator. An escalator either goes up or down. You either take the up one or the down one, therefore u can stand anywhere u want to. On an elevator u should always step to the rear and leave the front for other people getting on.

This always catches me out when I visit London - I suppose the logic is that the people in a hurry keep to the left all the time - slowcoaches like me have to get out of their way on the escalator.
