How am I supposed to protect myself while walking my dogs?

I live in Louisiana... I live in a subdivision where it's really bad. I'm 15 and I walk my dogs on the streets every day. The majority of people who live here are colored, and young kids run the streets unattended. A lot of parents are just as ignorant as their kids, and someone was even killed on this very street before we moved here 2 years ago... My parents are divorced, and my mom tries to make it with her job. My dad never sends us the money he's supposed to, and he owes 11,000 bucks. We've already had trouble with the neighbors a house down from us. They kept trying to start crap, and even called the cops for something really stupid. It was b/c a stray kitten was in her yard and she was yelling at me to get it out b/c it has fleas. She thought it was ours. I ignored her and kept walking. Before that they tried starting some other crap. And then, my friend I was walking with got beat up by some biotch from her school. And today, some idiot guy whisteled at me while I was walking.

It's just a matter of time before something /really/ bad happens... My mom doesn't want to get me mace anymore b/c she talked with my uncle who is a cop, and also another cop, and they said that the person could get their gang to take up for them and say I maced them for no reason.... So, I'm pretty much defenceless... I dunno if the dogs would do anything. After all, they didn't do anything when my friend was getting beat up... No wonder some people want to train their dogs to attack. I don't blame them, I do too... We can't move right now b/c my mom doesn't have the money. We moved here in the first place b/c this was the only cheapish trailer we could find... I'm from NC, and I hate it here! Not to mention, I'm homeschooled, so I'm home alone all day... Does anyone have any advice of what I could do, or what I could bring to defend myself if something were to happen? Sorry, about the long post, I just wanted to give you good details so you know what I'm actually talking about, here.

Oh, and I can't use a treadmill to walk the dogs. My mom said she'd get me one IF I would stop walking on the streets, but a treadmill is no substitute for taking a dog outside to explore.... Dogs need to explore and experience new things, so a treadmill is out of the question...

I never said anything about being prejudice. I actually have a colored friend. It's people like you who need to learn to stop being so friggin' offended by everything everyone says... And what I meant by that, is that it's usually blacks who start crap. I mean, we've had no trouble at all with whites around here... There are some blacks who are nice, too. First of all, how can you be home schooled and be home alone all day? That sounds like you are just not going to school.

If you really must walk alone with your dogs, do it before 11 am when most people who don't work are still in bed. You'll probably be the only one out on the street then. Otherwise have your mom come with you or have her give you a ride to a park in a nice neighborhood to walk the dogs.

COLORED?

That term hasn't been used for about 50 years, at least not by people with any sensitivity. Maybe it's different down south, but up here that word will get you a lot of angry feedback.

As far as anything that is bothering you while walking dogs (other dogs, people, wild animals), gets some mace and announce loudly that you've got it and you aren't afraid to use it.

I think the correct term is black or African Americans... but it isn't the fact that you said colored, it's the fact that you said that coloreds live in your neighborhood, as if that has something to do with the crime that goes on. Instead of being so defensive and immature, just shut the hell up... That would be nice... Anyway, look at your own question, and don't try to act like that doesn't sound weird. And stop cursing, you make yourself look younger and younger...


And the reason people can't get over racism is because of the people who still think like you do. Don't try to blame it on people who are offended by your ignorance. Just stop thinking that just because black people live around you that they're going to rape you or something.

Hi there..... my suggestion since it sounds as though you are unable to move is to buy a rape whistle and wear it around you neck when you walk your dog. You can also carry around your wrist. You can blow on this any time you feel threatened. Some schools/community education places offer self defense classes as well. I agree a dog needs to get out, but you have to be able to protect yourself if need be as well. Not all dogs will protect unless trained to do so.

You can wait a year for your license, and then take the dogs to a better neighborhood to walk them.

Or, try carrying a brick in your purse.

Or, forget about the dogs. They're not worth your life.

You can buy a small air horn it would hurt the ears of the attackers and draw attention.
And depending on what type of dogs you have if they love you as much as you love them thy will protect you.

what kind of dogs do u have u should get a german shepherd or a siberian husky thats trainded it wil protect u and it will protect ur dogs if there toys dogs
