I am a converted Muslim and I will try to answer you the best that I can. Also let me add that I am Sunni Muslim.

Day of Ashura is when we fast from sun up to sun down. It’s in remembrance to when Moses was saved from the Egyptians from Allah (God)
Among Shi'ites, however, It commemorates the death of Husayn (also spelled Hussein), son of Imam 'Ali and grandson of Muhammad, on the 10th of Muharram, AH 61 (October 10, 680), in Karbala, Iraq. The event led to the split between the Sunni and Shia sects of Islam, and it is of central importance in Shia Islam.
* this isn’t Fard . (Fard is obligatory/ having to do) However it is Sunnah meaning that the Prophet Mohammad did fast and that’s its strongly recommended
As to celebrating it we really don’t do in these terms. It’s more of when we break our fast at Iftar we have a big meal and a get together. Here in the Untied States these holidays get over looked a lot.

Ramadan is awesome. We fast from Sun up till sun down. While we are fasting we should abstain from sex, smoking, talking bad and any thing that could be bad. While dearing the day we fast we should remember Allah by praying, dikr, and reading Quran. Many people take this time to Read the whole Quran because the Quran is seprated in to Juz and there are 30 of them so we should try to read them all. Also as worshipe we pray Taraweeh which is done at night and can last very long. I personal like praying Taraweeh because it brings a peace over you when done in the nit the earth is at rest and it really brings you to God and spiritual peace

When fasting in Ramadan we get up be for the sun and eat breakfast as a family this brings the family together which I like in this fast pace world. At the end of the day we break our fast this is when the sun goes down. In Southern California at the Masjids we break our fast together. We all meet there as the sun goes we eat dates and drink milk or water this is something that the Prophet did. Then we go and pray Magraib the (4th pray of the day out of 5) then we all eat together. Some people have potlucks with their friends and families. This brings a lot of different foods together. This is almost like thanksgiving but happens every day for a month. After your fast is broken in the night you then are able to be with your spouse. In the muslim countries many people go out after they eat and shop and buy candies and sweets.

Night of Power (Laylat Al-Qadr) is the holiest night of Ramadan. This is the night that the complete Qur’an was sent down Prophet Muhammad No one is sure of the night is is said in the last ten days. There are some signs to this night but however I don’t remember them. Most people spend the last 10 days in the Masjid in worship for Allah. This isn’t obligatory to stay at the Masjid it is Sunnah. However if you have seen this and been a part of it the peace you obtain is indescribable. You’re not thinking of the outside world at all no tv or electronics you go back to basics.

The first day of the lunar month of Shawwal, which follows Ramadan, is known as `Eid Al-Fitr. This `eid (Islamic public celebration) Eid Al-Fitr is a happy occasion for Muslims. They come to the `Eid Prayers with a sense of accomplishment for having fasted the month of Ramadan and for coming closer to Allah. It is a time for sharing Zakat al-fitr with the poorest of the poor. (Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the `Eid Prayers.) It is a time for Muslim families and friends to worship and celebrate together. The pray is done very early in the morning and after the pray mean people get together and eat. The kids get presents and sometimes money this last for days.

Eid Al-Adha is during the Hajj season. This is after hajj and it also last days and its near the same as Eid al Fitr. It is a reward for the people who go to Mecca to perform Hajj.

These celebrations begin with special congregational Prayers (salah) followed by a sermon called a khutbah. The Prayers are held between sunrise and noon, usually early in the morning.

All of these holidays differ from year to year because we follow a lunar calendar it happens about 15 days early then the last year but still done on the sitting of the moon’s phases.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask me. And if you live in southern California I Invite you to come during Ramadan Iftar (dinner) to see how its done.

I belive that Ramadan will start Sep 24

the first Eid is the breaking of the fast this starts the 10 month of Muslim calander, als the month the koran was reverled.the second is the compleation of the Hajj to mekka, festival ofsacafice, not to compare it to christmas ,there is none.this will be my first Ramadan and i am very excited, you obstain from anything ingested, food water, gum, candy etc. and sex, kissing, hugs, etc. after sunset generally you get together and eat, pray, recite koran, alot of prayer involved, then you carry on like every other night, and start the day over again.the other i was not involved in last year, but Ramadan i was present every day of it but 1 due to my job i had at the time, this is when i became interested and started researching and asking alot of questions and 5 months later took my shahada, hamduallh

first of all we always pray for all our prophets-pbut (all the 1,24,000 of them) irrespective of the festivities. we dont need occasions to pray for them. we always pray for each and every one all the time, be it adam, abraham, noah, moses, jesus, muhammed-pbut.

2nd, yes we dont have food becoz it helps us realise the hunger of the needy, this is turn makes us give charity and a helping hand. also it helps our body and biological system in control.

3rd who said sex is refrained in the month of Ramadhan. u can have sex after u have broken the fast. that means that u should not have sex when u are fasting, but when u are leaving for the night after the night prayers, then u should not refrain from ur wives. islam says that a wife has the same right and desires over a husband as a husband has over her.

the Night of Power, the most blessed and the most peaceful of all nights. we all pray that night all night long asking for Alah's forgivess and mercy. remember the last 10days of Ramadhan are meant for forgiveness, as the doors to all the Heavens and Mercy will be open then. also the dorrs to Mercy will be open on every monday and thursday, that is why it is advised that one should fast on these days.

also there are many people who fast for many days just to thank God for everything they have, say something like ur Thanksgiving day.

we try complteing the recital of Quran in this month as this was the month the Quran was complete.

Eid-ul-fitr, we pray that day at the masjids and have a party at home, thanking Allah. elders give gifts to youngsters. and we all share gifts and blessings.

we are just like u as u fast for 40days. we also pray for most of the night just like christians do during the month of Christmas singing carols and hyms. and our Eid is ur Easter/Christmas.
