Depends on the illness. As a person who works closely with Bipolar people though I can tell you that when manic not only do they NOT realize most often they deny any mental illness with phrases such as "Im high on life." While depressed though, you will often hear it from them. Reasons being is that the manic patient will often be given meds to "bring him down" or take him/her out of the euphoric state while the depressed person will be given things like Wellbutrin XL to help them feel better.

"Mental illness" is a VERY broad category that will encompass everything from rather mild anxiety disorders to the most debilitating psychoses. Surely, most people on the milder end of this continuum have some sense that they are having some difficulties navigating daily life. Those in the throes of schizoprenia and the like, however, may be blissfully unaware of the extent of their problems.

A lot of people that have mental illnesses do realize it. And I'm certain that everyone with a mental illness, myself included, resent being called "these people" as if we're a bunch of lunatics with no feelings of our own that are another species entirely.

Some do. Some don't.

My grandma had Alzheimer's disease. Occasionally she'd have a moment of clarity and say to me, " I am going crazy."

It broke my heart.

A counselor or mental health professional might be a better resource for you, especially regarding the specific mental illness.

Usually not because what is crazy to us is normal to them. Unless someone shows them an alternative, they have no reason to believe that their state of mind is in any way abnormal. What's worse, those that DO find out they can be more "normal" through medication usually stop taking the medication once they start feeling better, so they go right back to the way they were.

Yes and ,no, because there are some individuals whos outlook on reality is so messed up,such as thinking that every one is oout to get you, that it would take alot of therapy to get them back. i imagine its like being brought up a certain religion, and then haveing someone else tell you that your wrong and their beliefs are right. But why should you believe them? and you really dont know because you were in that state of mind for so long thats your reality. And if you really were wrong you wouldn't know

I was born with mental illness-major depression-panic disorder-ocd-agoraphobia. I went to Dr after Dr seeking help and none of them knew what was wrong until after 46 years of living a life of misery, I moved to a small town and a small town Dr diagnosed me and helped me, however, I stopped my anti depressants because they were making me worse after awhile and I am almost back to where I was before I got help because my husband treats me with great disrespect which triggers my illnesses so I am stuck in a rut, unable to save myself, so my answer is YES, I knew I was sick, sought help, finally got it, now back to step one. There is help out there.
