my friend says doctors told him he almost had downs syndrome and they can tell because there is a line on his hand that isnt broken and on everyone elses it is...i dont kno whether to believe it as u either hav the chromosome or u dont... can anybody shed any light?

I agree with you - Down's is a genetic abnormality involving a whole chromosome - I can't imagine how you could "almost" have it.

The simian crease on the hand can be a "soft" indicator of Down syndrome. In my son's case, he has the crease on one hand and not the other. He does have Down syndrome. However, the crease does appear in about 1 in 30 of the population without having Down syndrome. Either the doctor is full of it, or your friend misunderstood what the doctor was saying, but you can't "almost" have Down syndrome.

Downs Syndrome is due to an abnormality in chromosome 21 & adjoining - also known as Trisomy 21. You either have it or you don't - signs are epicanthic folds around the eyes, outward- facing palms, and distended features amongst others. They are very affectionate and happy, and can live a very fulfilling life. Hope this helps...

The crease in your friend's palm is one of the indicators that doctor's look for in infants to infer down's syndrome. It is by no means definitive, it is simply a common characteristic.

I think I agree with you. You either have or you haven't. There may be certain features and things which are similar. I mean, even something like a white person having some "black" features, like lighter palms or large lips, doesn't mean that they are white. With downs, you can't almost have it.

I agree it sounds ridiculous, but my mother was told that I almost had it too. What a load of drivel the doctors are obviously still spouting forty-something years on ! Shouldn't make any difference anyway.

The palm crease can be a characteristic, but not always. Not all babies with DS have it.

Yea, and I was almost the king of Siam. You can't almost have down's and you certainly can't tell by palm reading.........
