If your hair is thick like mine, I have seen Garnier Nutriesse help strengthen hair. Getting a trim might help as well with the broken hair. I prefer Pantene to any thing else but others might advise against it. I have very thick hair and Pantene makes it silky smooth and manageable.

There are products that help to strengthen your hair. Get a trim so that you can get rid of the split ends. Use a good conditioner and buy a high quality strengthening cream/gel/mousse. These things will help.
An oil treatment can also help to start restoring your hair. First thing to do really is get a trim. Ask the salon to recommend products that help to strengthen. Read them carefully and choose a good brand like Paul Mitchell. I know that it is expensive, but it really does make a great difference in your hair.
