this is for those of you who don't know what an "imbecile" is................im·be·cile (ĭm'bə-sĭl, -səl)
n.
A stupid or silly person; a dolt.
A person whose mental acumen is well below par.
A person of moderate to severe mental retardation having a mental age of from three to seven years and generally being capable of some degree of communication and performance of simple tasks under supervision. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.....And I would probably have a real personal talk with your so called neighbor.

If my kid WERE an imbecile and I didn't realize it, I would at least take into consideration the neighbor's observation and assess for myself. Perhaps I failed my kid in some way, shape or form and the neighbor picked up on it subconsciously which is actually my fault when it's boiled down. Therefore, upon this revelation, I would sit my kid down and ask him/her why he/she is such an imbecile?
If my kid WAS NOT an imbecile, I would walk up to my neighbor and ask if he/she has a problem with my kid. Let him air his grievances (no matter how big or trivial) and tell him that his reasons are imbecilic. Then I would talk to my kid and tell them whether they did whatever the neighbor complained about or not- they should stay away from the neighbor all together.
If it persists after that, ground the kid and deck the neighbor.

I was sent home from my first time at cubs back in 1962 to tell my parents that i too was an imbecile,I remember i couldn`t even say the word let alone understand it.my father went to the hall and had a go at the man that said it,and i recall i did not go back.
Ask yourself,"who is the imbecile,a naive kid,or the insensitive twa* that said it"
I have brought up a decent daughter now 20,have been round the world, still live with my wife, and soon off to Asia for 2 months.
Put it down to experience and teach your child the difference between the right and wrong things to say to people.
Bonne chance.

In today's day and age it not unlikely to hear an Adult call a CHILD a name. Unfortunetly these Adults have no education or common sense. They feel as though putting a child down will make them a better, smarter person. They fail to realize that the only person who is an imbecile or another name, is them and they just want to deny it. Words are words explain to your kids that people are just clueless to reality and that they (your child) is and will continue to be the very best as long as they themselves strive for better.

The neighbour is looking for attention - are they old and imbecilic themselves?

I think you should explain to your children what that word means and have a word with the neighbour!

Good luck.

I would mind very much if somebody called me,or anybody else I know of, an imbecile, as such sweeping statements usually get my blood boiling. It is NOT correct for any outsider to abuse another persons children, unless the child has been entrusted to be cared for by that person. You should speak to your neighbor immediately, or else take serious action. Such behaviour could also move on from simple name calling to matters far serious such as physical abuse. Take care and nip such things in the bud.

What were your Children doing (if you take offence at imbeciles not sure why you would call your children after young goats) if you can not answer what your children were doing perhaps the neighbour was adressing the wrong person!

Adults should not be saying negative things to children in the first place. Regardless of the situation. Adults need to keep their feelings to themselves if they are only going to hurt another's feelings. Honestly, isn't that what we as parents are supposed to be teaching our children. That it is wrong to name call and pass judgment against someone for a flaw or imperfection that person can not help. Your neighbor needs to grow up, I would address the situation especially if your children are questioning their self-image....That is the most despicable thing I have ever heard.

a neighbor is calling your children imbeciles? Totally uncalled for. I would avoid this neighbor at all costs. Have your children avoid this neighbor as well. This is a bitter person who has nothing better to do than to call people names.

It depends what they were doing to provoke that reaction. Admittedly, no parent wants to hear people abusing their children, but if they have been being inconciderate of the neughbours and making too much noise, mess etc...then maybe your neighbour just snapped. Not an excuse, but a possible explanation maybe ?!
