The chemical used in manufacturing teflon can be released during use but in particular (this is the most important part) if you burn the pan, say by allowing a pan of boiling water to boil dry. Birds are very sensitive to compounds in the air. Ever hear of a canary in the coal mine? If the bird dropped over dead the miners knew to get the 'h' out because there was a gas leak still too small for the average human to smell. One site says you shouldn't use the self-cleaning setting on the oven since these are coated in teflon. Some bird owners go to extremes IMHO. I've used teflon for all the years I've had birds (30ish) and have individual pet birds that've lived in the house for almost that entire time. I like teflon, I'm going to keep using teflon. I use uncoated pans as well. If you feel better not using them the stores are filled w pans like stainless steel and enameled cast iron. A few days ago a person posted on YA birds that she suspected both her budgies died from the strong fragrance of a new room deodorizer. Those things give me a headache so I wouldn't be surprised if a bird could be overcome. Knowledge with a good dose of common sense is what I strive for. Read about the various substances that can be harmful to your birds and then make decisions based on how your family lives and what you're willing to do to accommodate your pets and still be able to enjoy them. I think they're lucky to have someone who cares as much as you do taking care of them =: ]

I sure did. In fact, most parrot owners I talk to have removed all non-stick cookware from their house just to be safe. Did you know that non-stick cookware is bad for us?

This is true. You have to be careful not to burn the surface of a non-stick pan because the fumes are harmful/fatal to birds. You can still use the pans of course, just make sure they don't get scorched.
