HELLO! upkeep is more expensive than the bird! Here is a list of what I bought for my cheap, $100 lovebird
1. Cage - 180
2. Pellets - 16
3. Quality Seed - 25
4 Stock of Toys - 200
5. Perches - 150
6. Well bird Check up- 125
Now take in mind....a lovbird is smaller than a grey so this is what your list is going to look like
1. Cage - 500-600 for a good powder coated one
2 Pellets - 40 so you have stock
3. Seed about 50 for double of what I use
4. Stock of Toys - 300-400 Greys chew, and chew some more
5. Perches - 200-250
6. Well Bird Check up - 150
Take the total. Its close to 2000. Plus, your going to have to buy more food each month, and new toys as toys are meant to be destroyed. Also, are you going to pay for vet visits? Don't just get a bird cuz its cheap or w/e. God. Stupid people

If I were you, I would find an Avian Vet and see if they know of any that need to be re-homed. While your talking to the vet, you can also ask about the general cost of upkeep (vet visits, toys, food, cleaning supplies for the cage, ect). If you haven't been able to afford the bird because they are expensive, you may want to reconsider untill your income is a little better. If after you take a good long hard look at your finances and deside you can invest the needed funds in a birds upkeep, THEN again, ask an Avain vet, and check bird rescue groups and websites.

Try an animal sanctuary.
There's a reason why they are so expensive. The onlty birds that can be kept as pets are those that have been handled from birth. Breeders put a value on their birds and their time.
Birds that have been caught in the wild are cheaper, buit never get tame. They find living in a small cage so close to humans and isolated from the rest of their flock extremely stressful.

Please make sure that you are well educated with regards to taking care of ANY bird. Birds are NOT to be put in a cage and then thrown in a room by themselves. They need socialization with their human "flock". It is imperative that the cage is in the middle of all the action-TV, activities, etc. Are you able to let your bird out for exercise EVERYDAY? Interaction is a must or else they will become depressed, pluck their feathers, scream like crazy. African Greys have the mentality of a 5 year old human-they are very intelligent. This is a lifelong friendship that you will be forming-think it over carefully. Good Luck!!!!

Grays are expensive because they are the top of the line, are costly to raise as well as extremely time consuming. It takes as much as six months just to hand feed and raise, I would say the chances of obtaining a CHEAP Gray is pretty slim. Ya can't run into Macy's and expect that blue light special.

I wish I could afford one as well. I can tell you about the cages, though. I just got my cockatiel a HUGE cage, 30 inches wide and 36 inches tall, for $99 SHIPPING INCLUDED. It comes in lots of colors and is powder coated etc. Shop around on eBay, they even had a corner cage with stand for $200 shipped! Don't let anyone tell you that you have to spend a ton on a cage.

Check out the Loot, and clasified ads in the local papers.
Alternatively there should be some rescue centers that have birds that need homes.
The RSPCB should be able to give you some advice, they may even have rescue parrots themselves.
