It would be the mind that fears. And it fears because that is the unknown about death and what will happen after death. Once death is understood you will not have any fear. Just as you would not fear driving in the highway when you have knowledge of driving and knows what it leads to.

The body always "fears" death--it is instinctive behavior which perpetuates the species. The soul can fear or not fear death, depending on its beliefs.

I am an atheist, and I have no fear of death.

"Although the time of death is approaching me, I am not afraid of dying and going to Hell or (what would be considerably worse) going to the popularized version of Heaven. I expect death to be nothingness and, for removing me from all possible fears of death, I am thankful to atheism." -Isaac Asimov
