perhaps go the repsonsible route and offer to do more housework, or pay them back slowly for the item. Talk to them about why you really need this thing and what you're going to get out of it.

Write up a contract saying why you need this thing and how it will help your life. Then offer to do certain things. Babysit, chores, better grades, pt job.
