Typically, telephoto lenses provide the best portraits, they tend to elongate the subject. As well, you would want to use a wide aperature to blur out backgrounds in traditional portrait photography. For close up photos, you would need to get a macro lens. When looking for a lens, they will tell you the minimum focusing distance. Some lenses will not focus closer than a few feet, but some will focus as close as an inch or so away. Just read the specs.

All I can say is - Don't buy the D80. I have one and it is plagued with a condition called Dead Battery Syndrome. You can put a freshly charged battery in the camera and after shooting one or two shots, it will indicate that the battery is dead. Turn it off and back on - the battery is good again. Do a Google search on "dead battery syndrome". You'll see that mine is not an isolated case. Nikon has not acknowledged that the problem exists (I guess to avoid a recall) and has told me to send in the camera for evaluation. BTW, I also have a D70s and it does not have the problem. I don't know that every D80 has the problem. It may only be a small population, but if you get one that has the problem, you will regret it. There is exactly one thing that I want a camera to do when I push the shutter button and that is to take a picture. It is maddening to have one that doesn't.

Something that covers the 70-85mm range would be ideal. Prime lenses used to be much better than zooms, but not so much nowadays (blame it on computers & advancements in the lens design process) Check out the link below for reviews on various Nikon lenses.

Use a 17-50mm lens, then set your camera for landscape on outdoor shoots. Use portrait setting for posed indoor shots. Use auto fucus at all times. If you have other questions, consult the camera manual or go to www.Adorama.com

85mm primes. You can fit a close up attachment, I think. Check Tiffen.
