I'm an American citizen, but i would like to know how can you become a Mexican citizen? Do i need to hire a lawyer or something? How much would it costs? I have ancestry from that country. Just of curiousity, can you also have triple citizenship? I have both Mexican and Spanish ancestry.

If your parents were both born in Mexico you can apply for a Mexican passport as they recognize the children of Mexican citizens as citizens.

The Mexican government does not recognize renouncing all prior citizenships in the US naturalization process, so you always retain your Mexican citizenship.

If you're talking about holding passports from these countries then you must meet requirements. First of all, find out if Mexico allows duel citizenship, if the laws of that country say No, then you can only be a citizen of one. The US only allows duel citizenship if the other country also says it's okay. The only way to qualify for a spanish passport would be if one of your parents or possibly even your grandparents (though usually only your maternal grandparents count here) came from Spain. Any further back, it doesn't mean anything.

Basically, you have to prove you have the hereditary right to be a part of any of these countries.

Some countries allow dual citizenship, others don't. Ways of becoming a citizen vary from country to country, as well.

Yes, a person can even have three different citizenships. I know a man who has four: Italian from his father, Swedish from his mother, Russian by birth, and Canadian by immigration.

Here is a very useful source of information:

If you were born in Mexico of parents one of whom was an American citizen who lived for 5 (or, many years ago 10) years in the USA prior to your birth, you were a dual national at birth. You might have lost your Mexican citizenship at majority, but the law was changed and you could now get it back.

If you were born in the USA of at least one Mexican citizen parent you would also be a dual national.

BTW my daughter has 4 nationalities: UK, Ireland, Switzerland, USA. She could havfe a 5th if she applied for it.
