My seventy year old grandma wants to watch my two young children (1&3 years)if I get a part time job. She doesn't want paid for it and we have no money and I probably couldn't afford to work if I had to pay someone. I have no doubt that she would take good care of them but she does have some health problems and I'm worried that it might be too hard on her. She insists that it won't be. Should I let her do it, if not, how do I tell her that I don't want her to without hurting her feelings or making her feel incapable?

I have an 85 year old great grandma that watches my kids for me but then again shes in perfect health, she'll probably live to 100.

What you should do is have her watch the kids for one day just her thats it and see if you like it. If not just tell her well I don't think you should watch the kids when you have issues with your health and stuff I love you too much to put that on you. You should take care of you right now you're far more important because I want to be able to visit you at anytime with my kids and we want to be able to see you!

One and three year olds are a hand full. If her health problems do not involved a bad back and such, then she could probably do it ok. Just lifting them and all. I would say, she could try, and then if she looks too tired, or ask her about her back, etc., then just sit down and say, you do not want to hurt her health. After she gives it a try, she will probably be ready to give it up. You really need to get a stronger person, for the health of the children too, it is dangerous for her to be lifting them , and she might get too tired, and go to sleep, etc. Try it, but keep an eye on things, 70 is really too old to be keeping a one and three year old full time. Part time might not be so bad, but 8 full hours, or so, that is tough.

You could invite her round for a meal and arrange to meet up with a friend for coffee for about an hour and see how you both feel after leaving both your children with her. She'll be able to see if she can cope on her own and you'll be able to see how you feel. Whatever happens, honesty is the best policy and your grandma will understand. She obviously loves you all very much so don't worry. Try things out see how you get on. Hope it all works out for you though.

You should have a babysitter. Maybe let grandma have the kids a hour or two one day a week. That is if grandmas heath can take that. The best thing I feel , is to be honest when talking with your grandma. You seem as if you love her. Bet she knows that too. Best Wishes.

Do you have any other family or friends who could go by and check on them without her being the wiser? Would you be free to call throughout the day or have a work number where she could call anytime? Your children are very young, she should't have any problems. Will she be watching them at your house where all their toys are? At least give her a chance.

You have to know what physical state she is - there could be HUGE difference between 70 yr olds..... my aunt is 65 and barely walk, I would definitely not leave my kids with her, my father on the other hand, is 74 and in a great shape - I sent my daughter with him to Europe for the summer ( that's where my parents live), my father was the one who took her on the plane though - and I felt very comfortable. So it depends on the person and you have to be the one to know how comfortable you feel with this.

Go out for a day and let her watch them. Do this a few times leading up to the amount of time you well be at work and see how it goes.

Yes, let her at least give it a try. Tell her to be honest with you if the job is to tough, but a lot of times things like this keep the elderly young.
