shorebreak...
Child tax credits are for single mums like me who need a helping hand to work AND look after their kids alone, this is a small tax aid to HELP me do that and not sit on my ar$e doing NOTHING..its because my kids fathers pay nothing toward their upkeep and me and five kids alone is how its always going to BE, dont penalise ME for claiming a benefit that is AID for low income and not abandoning my kids.
its an AID not a cruthc, tell mey 6 year old that she will never see mummy noon till noight cos shes at work while i leave her screaming for me with a stranger.

Tax credits are a very bad why to deal with low wages in the UK. It is administratively very costly. The government take your money in tax, process it and give you back as a smaller % of what you gave them. I know this is no reassurance, that fact is tax credits pay for poor employers. It is wrong but the system needs to be revamped. My part time job when I was 15 (20 odd years ago) paid more than a 16-17 year old is legally entitled to now. Edit @ Williams - GDP growth means nought to normal people. There are many ways to increase GDP, most of them a negative in the long term.

The average child tax credit payment is part of the proof that socialism makes people dependent and unproductive.
If they didn't have it, you'd work 40 hours per week rather than depending on other peoples money to cover half your expenses.
Edited to add:
In response to your comments, Sarah, I admit that my response was harsh. It's just that I see so many situations where women get themselves into financial crisis by having kids without a marriage or with someone who was never a stable mate in the first place. Then they turn to society and say they need money after they've made poor choices.
I know it's not the childrens fault, but it's the parents responsibility to make sure that they're provided for. It's not the responsibility of the rest of the taxpayers. I have 5 kids of my own to pay for off of one income - and no college degree to fall back on.
I realize that your circumstances may be different than the ones I've described, so forgive me if I've categorized you wrongly. But if you do fit into those circumstances, all I can say is what do you expect if you shack up with people outside of a marriage or if you have a habit of marrying guys who are losers? You were responsible when you made those decisions, and now the taxpayers are responsible for taking care of the result.
Also, if those non-paying father(s?) aren't in prison for lack of support, you haven't taken the necessary steps to provide for your kids. I don't know what the laws are in the UK, but here in the US you can have a warrant issued immediately for parents who fail to pay support. Do it.
Again, I apologize for showing disrespect in my original post, but I'm not gonna refrain from giving my opinion.
I wish you well.

Hiding behind glasses won't help you !! And don't even think about collecting over your kids backs. Get a better job, or educate yourself first, and you wouldn't need to ask stupid questions like this!
