If you walk into a shop like me and am going to pay £1500 cash for a laptop then what is the best way ot get some form of discount, considering if you do it online you save nearly £170

Just ask - sounds stupidly obvious but it's true.

Find out the shop assistants name and tell him/her that you are definitely buying TODAY with CASH and react like the price that the shop is offering is disgustingly high.

Be a bit cheeky and be persistent - their "best offer" usually isn't when you push them.

I've done this a couple of times.

Firstly; do you research - get an idea of what you want and how much it costs. Print it off or write notes. Dedicate a bit of time to this and if you're printing off from websites - try and use reputable ones.

Then go somewhere like Tottenham Court Road in London - or at least somewhere where're there're a number of shops that sell laptops (Not just companies like Dixons and Comet though - they're unlikely to deal); competition will make them willing to trade.

Never buy direct on entry, have a look and a chat, then move onto another shop. Tell them what you're doing. This can make them really hungry. Only stop when they start throwing deals and gifts at you; money off, web cams, software, cases, etc.

If you're not many shops accessible, wave around the print offs quote some choice deals. Make 'em sweat.

And remember; it's only any good if it's of value to you. A fluffy pink case is no good if you go to a lot of board room meetings, for example.

As a benchmark, look at:

But otherwise - it's a trawl online and a bit of leg work

tell him how much youd save online, show him a printout of it if you can.
ask him what the best cash price he could give you would be.

erm.....ask if you can use his staff discount if you give him a tenner!
