Kittens take a while to develop neurologically to have control over the extension and retraction of their claws, just as children take a while to have control over their bladders and bowels.

In the meantime you need to clip those tiny, sharp little points at the end of their nails on a regular basis. When you start doing this you may only get a few nails on one paw or all of one paw and not the other. Just keep at it. The kitten will get used to it and then you will never have a problem later on.

Most cat books show you how to do this and someone in the vet's office will be happy to demonstrate it for you. Cats are not hard to do as they nails are just like yours. The pink is the "quick", the white part is what you take off as it has no feeling in it.

There are these neat things for cats with claws called soft paws and they are like fake finger nails that way they won't hurt you or your furnature but without hurting the cat and no de clawing please it is more harmful than helpful honest look into it also ask your vet about trimming the claws more often cause they are sharp.

She will figure it out in time. My kitty took a year before she finally stopped using her claws. She still catches me with one once in a while. Just give your kitty time. She's still figuring out when she needs her claws and when she doesn't. As long as you don't pick her up and pretend to fly her around like an airplane she will learn when and when not to use them. With my cat, I used to take one finger and tap her lightly on the paw and say "No claws" every time she would scratch me or poke me. In the meantime, get a scratching post if you don't already have one. Pat your kitty hello for me and have a great day!!!

I don't know if you can. Mine still does that. I would suggest keeping her claws trimmed and only letting her do it if you're wearing jeans or have a thick blanket on. Her claws will get a little more dull as she gets older. I know kitten claws can feel like razors! Good luck!

I am still going thru this with my 8 yr. old cat & my 17 month old kitty. All I can suggest is learn how to trim her nails & start diong it soon to get her used to it. You should touch her paws a lot so that when you do start trimming the claws she will be used to it. There's also something called Softpaws that my friend uses. I'm not sure where she gets them, but I'm sure you'd find them thru a search or call your vet.

They won't and they can't help it. I'm sure they don't know that it hurts you. You have to trim their claws on a regular basis.

You can't teach a cat that. It's part of being a cat. It feels really good to them.
