It depends on the family situation.
Plan a suprise family reunion with just the immediate family and grandchildren and plan to have a family photo (professional) taken. Keep it simple.
If you have old movies, have the made into a DVD and add some favorite old family photos to it

Speaking from experience, having been married for 31 years & being a parent: my husband and I would dearly love to have all our children together one last time for a family gathering. A family camping trip,where all can get together. Eat, hike, sit around the camp fire and tell stories about growing up. Because who knows what lays in the future for any of us, but we all know family is the most important thing, and what better way to say thanks to dad and mom than to get everyone together and tell them.

Maybe throw them a party, get them a pet, treat them to a vacation, some keepsake which is engraved if funds are lot, purchase an appliance. It is great if you can get all the siblings in on one big ticket item.

go through old photo albums and have some nice photos of them blown up and framed.
take them somewhere special (maybe a restaurant or a park)
invite people closest to the family to a gathering

Find a really nice picture of them when they were first married (snapshots are best), buy a really nice frame, or make a scrapebook page for them, you can fame this also. Then have a gift card to a really nice restaurant attached to it.

yes make it slow no stress lite music for slow dancing and have it over with by ten pm so they can go to bed

Tell us about your parents....do they like to travel, are they active? what do they like?
I would take them out to dinner.
