You need to ask the airline or US Customs.

Here is a web site to get you started, but always confirm the rules with a genuine authority before acting:

This is the best:

It depends on the animal.

For dogs and cats, they need the required vaccination shots and certifications that most municipalities require (rabies being the most common).

Birds are generally prohibitted due to the risk of importing the Avian Flu to the U.S.

Other animals depend on what kind they are and where they are coming from. Your best bet is to check out the Customs and Border Protection and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) websites.

All shots must be current, and the rabies shot has to be at least 30 days old. And a letter of health certificate (stating animal is healthy from a licensed Vet. ) For civilians I'm not all that sure about all of the procedures....I was on Military orders so we didn't have to go thru quarantine (we just had to show our orders and his records, which were taped to his carrier)....... a matter of fact they were more worried about my cats food .....lol
Also each airline has their own requirements....check with them.

i'm also from the united kingdom and in case you want to import a dogs into the united kingdom it can both stay in quarantine for 6 months or get a puppy passport the position it comes from mutually with rabies jabs etc countless blood tests blah blah blah. even with the undeniable fact that it may not enter the united kingdom for 6 months after the most suitable jab and intensely last blood tests teach ok. No kenneling this kind , extra constructive for the dogs and cheap for you.

UPS
JUST KIDDING
A lot of it depends on the size and type of animal. In the case of a dog you would gave to have their shots up to date. You also need to check with the airline because they have different weight limits. My girlfriends niece couldn't bring her dog on a trip to Venezuela because she was a couple of pounds over the weight limit and she is not a very big dog. I have seen very small dogs brought into the passenger cabin but again, it is up to the airline.
