I'm currently studying by distance learning and i prefer to do it this way as i can study when ever i like and am not tied down to lessons at the same time every week.

The main advantage is that you can study at your own pace and hold down a job at the same time. This makes the course easier to pay for.

For me, there are good points and bad. I like the flexibility. I have chronic illness and can do it in small increments instead of hours of lecture.
But I also miss the classroom interaction and its hard to get feedback. For the most part, I think DL should be used only as supplemental education or if your situation prohibits attending physical classes.
Right now, I'm doing a bit of both!

Try the Open University:
After retirement, and with many years of effort, I got my degree in mathematics - perhaps the most rewarding experience in my life.
Advantages:
Study when/where you can
Less expensive than on campus
No need to travel, or sleep alone
Relate study to everyday life
Choice of meeting other students - or not
No "uni" food - unless you like Summer School!
One- to-one tutorship
Satisfaction - all your own work not like 'A' levels today!

Do what you want when you want and take the time off you both want and need. Only real issue is whether or not you are disciplined enough to actually learn anything!

Well if you stick with it and work hard at it and push yourself to do better every day then you should get quite an advantage, pronunciation is the hardest bit.

You can do it at home to save expense and time of travelling, eating out etc. You can fit it in around your life.
However, you have to be very well disciplined and can miss the social aspect. If you're stuck it's not easy to get an answer to something specific, as it would be in college/uni

You can go at your own speed. Study in peace without other students creating a racquet. Teachers will not nag you for going to slow or fast.
