Police cars are not the same as show room vehicles sold to the public and some police cars are specific pursuit vehicles which are even faster/quicker and handle better than all other police vehicles that are designed to safely out perform any public motor vehicles. The officers said with certain wheel and suspension packages they can move them safely around 120 mph but they can move the high speed pursuit cars 200 mph with some stability problems. :)

A million miles per hour!!! It all depends on the car, the weight of the officer, the gas, the grade of the raod, wind resistance, etc. There is not one top speed that all police cars can go. Generally, they are all capable of going over 100 MPH. California uses the same police cars everyone else does. Some places have exotic cars that have been reposessed from drug raids, etc however no city has a police force that exclusively uses "exotic' cars.

actually our cars can go up to 140, the mustangs you heard about are for strictly pursuits and can go as fast as 200. The reason they go faster than regular cars and last longer is they have a special engine and suspension package in them. Most of us only run them to 120 because they start to get a little squirrally in the rear end. There are rumors about dicontinuing the Ford crown vic and going with dodge chargers.

Yes, California uses supped up police interceptors and Mustangs on the highways..... I 'm not sure about other states... I assume that they get their police cars from the same source... you asked about the speed.... the sedans top out at 130-135 mph.. the Mustangs..140.

"O" Wise One knows.............

Police cars can go as fast as any other street legal motor vehicle. Most police version vehicles have been modified slightly in that their suspension and transmission systems are re-enforced for constant road use and/or off road driving. A police Mustang can go as fast as a Mustang off the show room floor, but it can be driven faster for a longer distance. Many jurisdictions use Mustangs or other low-profile vehicles for this purpose (and also Ford gives them a huge discount).

Donut jokes..can't get enough.
It's already been answered but yeah it depends entirely on the car make and model and engine. I strongly doubt that California has some super chip or whatever that they put in, that other states don't have access to.

Some departments have cars as "mascots" bmw, vipers, corvettes, etc. just for fun and special events..

That depends on the make, model, and any modifications done to the car in any particular city. I don't know about California, but other states have cars that don't go quite as fast because they're off-road vehicles that they use because of the rugged terrain in the area.

It all depends, really. Around here, they are just regular cars. Top out at the same speed any other crown vic or intrepid does.

Some cars in, say, Dade county, florida, actually have Nitrus Oxide in them, though.

It all depends on how fast the car NEEDS to be for the prevalent types of crime in a particular area.

It would depend on the type of police vehicle. Some traffic enforcement units have faster vehicles to intercept vehicles. The radio is the fastest method of interception.
