Yep water is the only way - it will help even cutting them by a running tap, but for best results in a clean bowl. Also cutting them "with the grain" releases far less scent that makes your eyes water.

Also don't cut garlic at the same time next to the onions - that really kicks in then!

I have read all the answers......The best way would be to not cut into the root end of the onion. This would not only hold the onion together whilst cutting it but would also reduce the fumes which are produced.

It's nothing to do with water, goggles or bread. Use a sharp knife, and keep the root end intact. Cut the root off after you've cut the onion up. REALLY WORKS

1. cut the onion in half DO NOT CUT THE ROOT OFF
2. cut along the little green lines on the onion down to the root
DO NOT CUT THOUGH THE ROOT
3. cut across and then throw root away
4. NO TEARS AT ALL AND YES IT WORKS ITS HOW I DO IT AND SO DO TOP COOKS

Take off the skins and soak them whole in ice cold water for 15 minutes.

OR

Before you start peeling and chopping them, light a candle. I read in a magazine doing so makes the heat from the candle react with the fumes onions give off. I tried it and it works!

Drop them in the food processor - saves the tears (and the cut fingers where the not so sharp knife slipped off the slithery onion!)

You can put lemon juice on the cutting board. Also chewing gum while you cut onions works.

I usually burn a scented candle close to where I am cutting my onions, and if I really can't be bothered, then I peel them and put them in the food processor to blitz them quickly.
