I recommend McAfee, but read the following reviews:
1) McAfee VirusScan Plus
Antivirus, antispyware, and firewall are included in this 'mini-suite' from McAfee. An ideal candidate for those seeking robust protection without all the bloat of traditional Internet security suites.
2) McAfee Internet Security
For those seeking a full blown Internet security suite, McAfee Internet Security offers traditional antivirus, firewall and antispyware complete with spam and phishing protection as well as backup utilities. McAfee's superb detection rates are near legendary.
5) PC-cillin Internet Security Suite
Building on its solid antivirus capabilities, PC-cillin Internet Security Suite automatically checks for new virus updates every 3 hours and the spam prevention includes a whitelist, blacklist, and Bayesian filter - all at a price substantially lower than many other antivirus suites. If spyware is a problem, consider supplementing the spyware scanner in PC-cillin with either Windows Defender or CounterSpy.

I have always had Norton in the past but recently got a new computer that came with McAfee and it seems like a good program as well. I think as long as you have some kind of a good anti-virus program and keep it up to date and use your head about what you look at and especially stay away from free downloads you should be alright. Also you should have some anti-spy ware programs as well. I have as I said McAfee anti virus and I also have Microsoft,s 'Windows Defender' as well as Spy bot and Ad-Aware. Maybe a little overkill but I have never had any virus or Spy/Ad ware issues.

Of those two products, McAfee is the one that has been discovered with the most "holes" in it. Their program made the news, about two weeks ago, and all they would say was that they were working on it. Experts said that the problems were potentially serious.
Norton is the better of the two, and if you normally keep your computer on 24/7, then Norton will download automatic updates

Norton and MacAfee are both system hogs - they use a lot of resources for what they do. If you have an older computer this can create lock ups and freezes on a regular basis. The PCillin that someone else recommended is better for that as is Panda software.

They are both resource hogs! Computer Associates has E Trust EZ Virus which has a small footprint. Betters still, combine Zone Alarm firewall in one interface with CA EZ Virus and you have Zone Alarm with Antivirus at a fraction of the cost and system resources.

I have been using mcafee for two years and really like it, the only problem i've had is when i renewed it i had to keep verifying my subscription. But i have heard that norton is better. I think it's basically a matter of choice.

Neither - both memory hogs and are only REACTIVE as far as viruses are concerned (they have to know about the virus before they can give you a fix for it).
Panda Internet Security is Both Reactive as well as Proactive - it uses an algorithum to search for virus patterns. AND it does not use much of the system resources.
