This is in response to another answerer here... of course, I agree that it's Bush and American corporations draining the economy into their own veins that is causing the U.S. to become a third-world country... they've already done it to a lot of other nations and now it's our turn.
Senior citizen, of course your employer owes you a living. It's sickening that we live in a country where you can work without getting enough money to live well. It wouldn't take 8 hours a day to grow vegetables and build a house for basic third-world living if you owned a very small plot of land, but you have to work for 8 or more hours a day if you expect to live on the same level. We should be able to afford a few luxuries.

I suggest you stop worrying about being defined as a third world nation. But I hardly think that the pay scale lowering signifies that that is what this country is becoming. What matters is that our education doesn't degrade. And the fact that you spelled what should be "our" as "are" twice makes me very mournful at the state of our education institutions.
Did our nation become third world when Eastern European and Irish immigrants came last century? No, it grew because jobs that neither wealthy nor poor Americans didn't want to do were done by the immigrants that were trying to do what they had to do. It should be no different today.
Just some ideas to chew on :)

Don't worry, I think we're far from it. Have you ever been to a third world country? True that a lot of OUR jobs are in Mexico, but you've got to remember that we, as Americans, are getting a lot of kickbacks from that too. For example: cheaper goods. Companies don't have to pay foreign workers that much, thus they make more money, resulting in them being able to keep their costs to you low.
What I don't like is ILLEGAL immigration. Why should some people be able to come in without having gone through the processes that every other country has to go through? And, then why should illegal Mexicans then get free education, health care, and not have to "put back into the pot" by paying taxes?

I would say that the USA is in economic decline, but it's not because of immigration, and we're not turning in to a third world country. It's in economic decline because production jobs are moving overseas as corporations take advantage of cheap labor, and because Americans are over their heads in debt--and using fake money to get there.
American jobs go overseas because the people who OWN the corporations can make more money by paying people elsewhere less money. Americans don't work cheap, but other people do.
Mexican immigrants have generally done the jobs that white Americans don't want to do, like picking crops in fields all day. (Black people used to do that, but they were slaves then. You don't see many of them hanging on to THAT job, or complaining that Mexicans are taking all their work.)
More recently, we see Mexican people doing more jobs in construction and other labor-intensive industries in the USA. They do often work for less, but often their pay is the same as an American doing the same job. I know, because I've worked with them several times in construction and food production.
Be careful who you listen to. They might not be informed, which means that you aren't, either, if you believe everything without doing your homework.

I think this is a sign of a general trend. We can see immigration coming in to lower wages in America, not just because immigrants are willing to work for less, but because increased immigration creates a larger labor pool, meaning there is more competition for jobs. Employers see this, and take advantage of it. (who can blame them for pursuing what's in their best interests, that's one of the tenants of Capitalism.) But another aspect of this trend, is the idea of Free Trade Zones. This is very similar to the EU except in the Western Hemisphere. As you have probably seen in recent years, Congress has made policies such as NAFTA and CAFTA. The intent of these is to create a free trade zon for all of the Western Hemisphere. You should realize what this means, even more competition for jobs with people who are willing to work for next to nothing because they are desperately poor. The eventually effect of this will be to equalized wages and harmonize the economies in the Western Hemisphere. Meaning that, while countries such as Belize and Colombia become wealthier; it will be at the expense of the United States and Canada primarily.

Jobs are actually going to China and Malaysia, not Mexico. Its becoming a third world nation because of that, and because education is being underfunded and dilluted with religious tripe. And the value of the dollar has collapsed because of the debt Mr. Bush has run up with his war and tax cuts for billionaires, financed by loans from Communist China that now stand at about a trillion dollars. Thats the real reasons its going down.
