I hate that. I'm black and I have long thick hair and whenever I'd wear it down ppl think I'm wearing extensions. I know there are a lot of black women who dont have long or thick hair. but why do ppl just automatically assume that our hair is phony?

I suppose its because so many of black women wear weave and it looks so real that they cant tell if its real or not so they just generally assume its not because black women hair is normally not really long. I feel your pain, I'm in the same boat you're in. My hair is really long and I wear it in an updo 99.9% of the time. And when I wear it down they run their fingers through my hair to check for tracks!

I personally understand what your talking about. Honestly I think a lot of the times ppl just assume that black woman can't have naturally beautiful hair. But it is possible. It's very possible, When I was a little girl I had really long thick hair and now I wear it short. But honestly weather your wearing weave or it's your real hair it's your business.Truth be told, ppl shouldn't be looking at your head that hard anyway.

I guess b/c alot of women wear extensions. I used to have really long thick hair (about 4"-5" past my shoulders). Some people made assumptions but it never bothered me; I knew what was real. However, due to a coloring incident, alot of my hair came out in the back so I wear extensions now. When it grows back to a reasonable length, I will cut it into a shorter style (i.e. a little above my shoulders).

By the way, just because a black woman doesn't have :"long thick hair" doesn't mean her hair isn't "pretty." I have seen several short & natural styles that are just as beautiful.

Because of the way black women are portrayed. If you're on the milk chocolate/mocha side of black like I am, you rarely see a woman of that shade with long hair that isn't a weave. You don't see the lighter skinned women being portrayed as "weave wearers" (lol I know that sounds ridiculous but that's the best way for me to explain it) My own hair is now a few inches past my shoulders. I have my pics on sites like myspace.com and blackplanet.com. Men are always asking me, "Is that your hair?" The question doesn't bother me though. (I think I've lost my train of thought................ ) Anyway, I wouldn't say that there are a lot of black women that don't have long or thick hair. Sometimes their hair is braided up most of the time and you can't tell. I know quite a few people that are black that do have long, thick hair.

Lets be honest I'm a black female that happens to be a stylist. It's not really a stereo-type but lots of black female so wear weave. But what people don't know more than half of the white and mexican females that have hair down their backs are a weave too. We use the traditional way of getting a weave. But, the others use that strand by strand technique that is undetectable to eye.

You know what happens when people assume things, right?

They make an assoutta-u&me!
Tell them that your hair is the only real hair grown by a black woman, on the whole planet, and that you are paid millions for selling it to weave manufacturers.

I like the people in the grocery store, who look at the forty pound bag of dog food, and 5 cases of canned dog food, that I'm buying, all of which is clearly marked "DOG FOOD", and still find it necessary to ask me if it's for my dog! Who the heck else would it be for?

Without stupid people, how would we know who is smart?

I don't feel that way, but they probably think it because most black women with long hair do have extensions. I don't know a lot of people like that - I guess those people are just confused.

let me quote you: I know there are a lot of black women who dont have long or thick hair.

I think this is enough for an assumption. Wouldnt you assume that if you see a hispanic with blonde hair that its dyed?? Yet there are tons of blonde hispanics, so its an assumption based on the knowledge of majority.
