On a speeding ticket, what does it mean if the method is "marked"? How did they detect my speed?

I got my first ticket, and I was speeding and intend to pay the fine, but I am curious as to what the method of determining my speed was. I was traveling East, and the only officer I saw was traveling West. There was not a "speed trap" per se.

In response to the person who thinks I am playing games, I am not. The "Method" area of the ticket shows 10 categories: 0. H.H. Radar; 1. P.L. Car; 2. Radar; 3. A. Craft; 4. Marked; 5 .Vascar; 6. C. Signed; 7. Assist; 8. Accident; 9. Other. So, the method area of my ticket has choice "4. Marked" checked off. Hope this clears things up.

"Marked" usually means marked patrol car, as opposed to the unmarked cars the NYS Troopers here love so much!

Many patrol cars have their radar on all the time, if you were coming towards him he would get a reading on the speed of your car as it is coming towards him. Many people know that sinking feeling of seeing the patrol car that just passed them whip a U turn and flick on the light bar.. :)

Hello, Marked means a Marked car, it had lights, and big letters police on the side, not an unmarked car. Some states have laws that don't allow unmarked cars to do traffic stops unless specific conditions are meet.

And yes the car that was gong the other direction would have used radar to track your speed

They can track you from in front of thier car going in the same or opposite direction or from the rear of thier car going in the same or opposite direction.

So as he was going the other way he would have seen your speed on his radar unit, and most likley would have turned around and caught up with you

He may have been using set points to judge your speed... In which after you pass the first marker he starts a timer and stops it after you cross a second marker. If your time is too low, then you were speeding.

At 55mph you're travelling at 80.6 feet per second. So all the cop would have to do is observe a stretch of road about 160 feet long. If you pass the 160 ft mark in less than 2 seconds, you're speeding.

He was probably using "rolling radar" to determine your speed. Rolling radar, basically, measures the speed of his car and the closing rate with your care and displays the difference. Hypothetic: He's doing 30 mph, and the closing rate between your car and his is 75 mph...the radar subtracts his speed (30) from the closing rate (75) and VIOLA!!!! 45 mph.

The method is on the ticket it should be checked. Radar Laser Paced or Vascar. The radar unit has 2 antennas one on the front and one on the rear. He could of clocked you approaching or after you passed with rear antenna.

If he was going the opposite direction it was radar. That is how l write speeding tickets.

My suggestion would be to call up the police agency who issued you the ticket and ask to speak to someone in their traffic or motors unit and ask them. They would know best =)

It probably means they paced you, got behind you and matched their speed to yours.
