he will not eat what i give him. I finally figured out his favorite food (which is like $1.50 a can) but when i give it to him, he wont eat it all. And he refuses to eat the rest later. or if started giving him half. It turns out he doesnt like leftovers! (i know, a cat not like leftovers) hes so picky. Im so afraid he wont eat it at all and he'll starve! HI decided to just see if he eats the leftovers from the can anyway, and he didnt eat it all day. What should i do? Should i just make him? What a snoot!

You really shouldn't leave the can food out all day. Give only a small amount and cover and refrigerate the rest. You can leave dry food out. If she doesn't eat it only leave like 1/4 cup in her bowl and change it every few days to keep it fresh.

First of all, cats don't really need to be eating canned food. Many cats are finicky. How long have you had the kitten? If you just got him, I would call the person/place you got him from and ask what they were feeding him before.
I would try feeding him dry kitten food...Friskies or Purina...most cats that won't eat Science Diet or the more expensive brands of dry food will eat these two brands. It's kind of like kids eating junk food. It won't hurt your cat to eat these brands...just stay away from the store brands of food, they don't have enough of the right nutrients for cats.
Also I would just leave the food out for him to pick at all day. If he isn't eating at all, you should take him to the vet, he may be sick. If the vet can't find anything wrong with him, you'll just have to continue experimenting with different brands. While you are doing this you might also try feeding him Gerber brand baby food...turkey is usually a good flavor to get them started.
Have you tried the canned Friskies...turkey and cheese flavored...shredded? I foster home cats and these are things that I do to get cats to eat. You might get some Nutri-Cal from your vet also...it is something to try and help stimulate a sick cats' appetite and has lots of calories in it.
You didn't mention if your cat is losing weight or not. Your cat will not starve himself, but the canned food does get real nasty after a few hours so don't try to make him eat the leftovers. Leaving it out overnight is long enough. Good luck.

Hello. You will probably waste alot of food doing this, but in the long run it should work.
In the morning give him a good brand of food at the same time each day. If he doesn't eat it in about an hour, take it up. You can refrig it but he may not like it later, but try anyway. In the evening same time each day, put some in his bowl and set it down. Always keep food and water in the same place and never near a litterbox. Cats are creatures of habit. He's developed a bad eating habit not eating and you need to replace it with a good one. You have to continue to do this for several days, if he doesn't eat, dont worry he won't starve, he'll eat when he gets hungry enough. Then you can continue just leaving his food out in the morning or evening. Always leave fresh water available to him, a cat can go several days without food, but they need water. Good luck.

Don't know how to MAKE a cat eat, I would suggest putting the whole can out (if it's the smaller can- not the 8 oz. size) and let him eat when he gets hungry. Don't put a time limit on it... my cats nibble on their food all day. I put out a can of food in the morning and by the time I go to bed they've eaten most of it. I would put a bowl of dry food out as back-up. Maybe he would like the dry food better. Once he gets hungry, he'll eat. He will have no choice. He won't starve to death... I know of no suicidal cats.
My cat Figaro is finicky too. He won't eat any seafood types of cat food. He likes only chicken, turkey and beef. Try different flavors with your cat. He may like something that you find repulsive (like gizzards or something like that). I used to worry about Figaro because I never saw him eat. Anytime I would walk out to the kitchen he would run from the bowl and pretend he wasn't eating.
Maybe your cat doesn't want you to watch him. Give him time and he will be ok. If you see any evidence that he is not eating at all after a week- take him to the vet. But that's a rare scenario.
Have a great day and pat your kitty hello for me!!!

my kittens were the same way because I got them from a shelter and they were used to something different. I buy the friskies pouches because they are single servings and they stay fresh and dont "taste like a can" and now they wont eat anything else!! Also, a kitten should eat twice a day everyday at that age, so you may want to empty the can into a bowl if you dont want to switch brands because most kittens won't eat from the can anyways. Good luck!! And if all else fails, call a local vet, they might have a suggestion over the phone so it's not such a hassle.

at 10months he is almsot a year. i remeber my cat being like this when he was 10 except he would eat the food just not the crumbs so you had to put new fresh whole kibbles in his bowl...what she is going through is like shes well 3 lets say in human years cause every 1 year is like 4 humans years dogs its 7.. 3 year olds are picky and dont eat that much. she is going throught the same thing. i agree what to do is dont let her eat anything for a whole 24 hours and then shell be hungry again and every time she wont eat what you give her keep doing it shell learn to eat it sooner or later. or whats good is to crack a raw egg on their food my cats love this. or if you eat tuina instead of putting the tuna juice down the sink pour it in a bowl and put it on her food then set her buy it and kinda put her head down so she can smell it.

Ha ha ha, it is nearly impossible to 'make' a cat eat! Give it time...if he's healthy he can go several days without eating. Heat the food slightly as that stirs up the aromas, then put it on the floor and WALK AWAY...as if you could care less if he eats or not. Leave it there for 24 hours. If he has not eaten it after 24 hours, then perhaps a trip to the vet is in order.

If you have taken him to the vet and everything checks out alright then I would let him get hungry enough to eat - his natural hunger instinct won't let him starve if good food is available. This sounds cruel but isn't - he'll grow out of it. My Fred, who passed away back in March at 13, always had to have fresh (dry) catfood so I tried not to let much stay out at a time. Do provide the best you can afford for him, Kitten Chow is good for the first year and fresh water daily is critical for their kidneys. Their coats will tell you if the food is nutritous. Fred's was very soft and a bit shiny, but not oily. Handle your kitten as much as possible so that he'll be a lapcat as he gets older. Fred grew to demand that he be held and a lap be formed for him (owner or other human must sit down) by meowing loudly. Cats Rule! Good Luck!

I love animals and here's what I can add.
A cat won't eat what it can't smell.
And at 10 months a kitten is still developing and is prone to lots of nagging little problems. If something is effecting it's sense of smell that could be contributing to its pickyness. If it has a little cold, you can lock it in the bathroom with you while you are taking a hot shower (for a week or so) and let it breath in the steam. That could help for minor problems Best thing to do if it doesn't clear up soon is see a vet.
Good luck with your little kitty.

You should jsut put out food and leave him alone. Changing his food constantly will give him indigestion, which will make him eat less. Also if you're making a fuss over it you may be stressing him. When I brought home my big fat kitten Calabaza, she was so nervous in her new surroundings that she didn't poo for a week! I took her to the pet store and they said she'll warm up quick enough.
Another thing to think about is that wet food will make the kitty's box smellier. I just give my guys dry food.
Just be patient, he will eat when he gets hungry and he won't care what it is. I promise he will not starve.
