petfinder.com has a listing of wonderful dogs at your local shelters, and listings of animal rescue in your area.. as well as other states. I adopted a 7 - 8 year old abused - toothless - female toy poodle. She turned out to be an absolute darling! She came from IN, and I live in northern WI..
These precious animals need love..more than half of them are literally starving for love.. they deserve to have a forever home, that will provide them with conditional love, and proper care.
Please take it into your heart to look at these sweet angels first. Yes, having a certain breed, color, or 'designer dog' is something Paris Hilton would do, and has done.. but these babies, just want to be someones best friend in the whole wide world.
You won't be disappointed.. I promise!

Boston Terrior!! I've had many different breeds and by far, the boston terrior is the absolute best! I highly recommend them. I had a beagle, but they roam alot (hunting of course). Their bark can get annoying too. The Boston is playful when YOU want to be. They are not hyper. Typically, if you're not playing with them, they're completely satisfied lying around or sleeping like a cat. They're so loyal. And mine can understand anything I tell her. She's a wonderful dog and she obey's so well. You can teach them anything.

It's time for you to do some research on breeds...or mutts for that matter.

You will need one where there energy matches yours and don't forget your lifestyle. All dogs need exercise, discipline (to teach, not to beat) and affection.

Beagles are high energy dogs. Their breed is for hunting (high energy). Will that work with your lifestyle? Do you like to get out for walks, runs, going to the park...do you live in a house with a yard or apartment/condo/townhouse?

There are many things to consider before getting your new friend. I would recommend "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan. It's a great read and a serious eye opener.

You can also go to the American Kennel Club (on-line) and read up on the different breeds.

Best wishes!

beagles are nice but they can howl at night. golden retrievers and yellow labs are what i'd pick. I've heard they are very gentle dogs. Plus there are retired greyhounds. I'm guessing that you wern't going for the puppy route. Try to steer away from Jack Russels as they can be very hyper. Chihuahuas tend to yap and protect their territory. Pugs can have breathing problems. I'd do some research on the internet.

my dog, bruce, is a pitbull mix---we think he might also be lab or hound or both. he's a puppy, so this is probably why, but he takes 2-4 naps during the day. they're average time, but also, he can be calm, and he has a very sweet personality. i'm not suggesting you get the same kind of dog i own, but maybe i guess a beagle.

A great dane! They are playful but are also big couch potatoes. Mine loves to go out and play ball for about an hour, but other than that he lounges around the house. Best breed, I will never own another breed.

whatever you decide you should consider rescue. There are alot of dogs, mixed and pure bred that have been "thrown away". You can certainly save a life for a nominal charge instead of paying thousands of dollars at a breeder.

I understand beagles howl alot and also have a high prey drive.

Good luck!

beagles howl.

a bulldog would be cool. theyre expensive, but theyre really playful for awhile, then they get tired and pass out. so cute...

or you could try a spaniel of some sort, like a brittany spaniel. most little dogs are hyper.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER!
They are paitent, kind, loyal and VERY will to work and please you!

I have one and he is the BEST dog I have ever had! Very easy to train, and of course he is spoiled.

I would not get a Beagle. You would have to have some experience and know that breed well.

Hope this helps! And Goldies all the way!
