I think acrylic is your best bet. Its more vivid than fabric paint and has a fuller body so you'll get good coverage. It will adhere to the canvas really well. And if you "make a mistake" or change you mind- you can paint right over it once its dry. My experience with fabric paint has never been that great, whereas whenever I have painted clothes with acylic the results are good.

Anything painted onto a pair of shoes will fade or peel off eventually, so whatever you use, take care of the shoes and don't wear canvas shoes in the rain or snow anyway.
If you already have acrylic paints, use them, for me they are just as good as fabric paints, the only difference is that acrylics will dry a little bit harder (because they have a slightly plastic finish) and not fade. Fabric paints dry softer (you will not feel a difference between the painted and unpainted parts of the shoe) but can fade.

I've never painted canvas shoes but if I were you I'd use fabric paint. Acrylic paint is water soluble which means it will come off the fabric if exposed to water. Acrylic paint can also flake and peel off of fabric too. It's most often used by artists for traditional painting on canvas but it can also be used for other craft projects such as wood and plaster painting. However, when it's used on these surfaces it needs to be sealed with an acrylic coating.

Fabric paint is good. Usually you can get small tubes for little money. You can also use acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium or acrylic alone. Fabric medium is milky-white or clear in color and can be found with the acrylic paints. Fabric medium helps the acrylic adhere to the fabric, to simulate regular fabric paint.
I agree with alizirinlily, using acrylic gives you more color variety than fabric paint. Also, fabric paint is rigid and not easy to apply.
I've painted my jeans with acrylic w/o the medium and it worked out great!

acrylic will work...go to a local art store or rag shop and ask for the acrylic paints, acrylic is a very good type of paint that basically goes on any medium.

Acrylic should work just as well. Most fabric paints I see are actually pretty crappy. Why not go with a dye instead?

I've painted Converses with acrylic before. It seems fine so far, but I haven't wore them in bad weather yet.
