I'm a female, I'm looking into buying a gun for personal protection. I will do everything legally and I will practice at a shooting range. I want a gun that is small or compact but still powerful. Basically I want something that I can control, manuver, and handle well. Do handguns come in pink? Just kidding.

I would highly recomend a Kel-Tec P3-AT in .380. It is as small as my wallet but packs enough punch to do the job.

This is what my wife carries and she loves it. You can get it at most guns stores for $250-300.

Let me add another voice recommending the Lady Smith chambered in .38 Spl/.357 mag. Whatever you do, DO NOT get a .22 for personal defense. They do not have the stopping power that you need. Someone shot with a .22 will be seriously injured and possibly even killed but they won't stop for a long while. They will last long enough to do a lot of harm to you before they collapse. The Lady Smith is a very good gun which is made specifically for people with small hands. It is a revolver which means that it has fewer potential problems to contend with when compared with a semi-automatic handgun. You are taking the correct route to becoming a responsible armed woman. Do take a course in self defense with a handgun that covers the laws that pertain to the use of deadly force. Do not go out with a gun in your possession without first knowing the applicable laws. Just having a concealed Carry permit does not provide any legal defense if you violate any laws. 'nuf said. I'm glad to see a woman taking her safety seriously. Hope you NEVER have a reason to draw your gun in self defense.

I would recommend the Model 60LS Revolver - LadySmith®.

This gun is designed for a woman's smaller hands. It's made out of stainless steel so it won't rust if it were be neglected little bit and not cleaned regularly (I don't recommend that). It's chambered in 357MAG/.38+P. That means you can shoot either one this gun. The .38 is less powerful but still adequate for your needs.
It's a revolver which are a bit simpler than semi-autos. This means that it will take less practice to become proficient with it under "high stress" situations. The emphasis is on LESS, the proficient and safe use of firearms takes a lot of practice no matter what kind it is.
While I'm a big believer in concealed carry and self defence, I urge you to be sure this is what you want to do. You have to be mentally ready to take another life to save your own. Went you pull your gun out you have to shoot to kill, shooting to wound is stuff you see in the movies.

i second the ladysmith. a .38 will be a good, small gun. it will be a good defense gun and easy to conceal, carry. not too much $$$ to practice with either.

They might come in pink or maybe you could get one with a pearl handle. I would recommend a good .22 automatic.

They do make guns specifically design for women. Go to a gunshop and check them out.
