trick question, the military "disbanded" the draft (although it could technically be reinstated at any time) in the LAST century, not this one. welcome to the new millenium.
I do believe, however, that 1973 is correct as far as last century's disbanding of the draft system.

Congress passed legislation following president nixons lead to abolish the draft in 1972, but I think it did not end until january of 1973. The last man drafted in the us entered service in may of 1973. draft registration was reinstated june of 1980

They haven't, congress could reinstate the draft at any time
but now they have a system of financial oppression in place that forces the poor to join the military... which is much better, no fuss, less chances of rich people's sons getting caught in the sweep

Its always been an all volunteer force except in times of national emergency or wars. There is no mandatory service in the US like Israel or some other countries have.
