All the other posters are correct about kennel cough and heartworms. Unfortunately, terriers are known for collapsing trachea- if it is severe enough, it will require surgery to fix. It sounds to me as if this is what you might be dealing with. See your vet and discuss the problem. They should recommend radiographs in order to diagnose- along with running a heartworm test just to rule out even if you have been giving prevention every month.

Coughing has nothing to do with the breed. Call your vet asap...your dog could have canine influenza, heartworm, distemper, URI, kennel cough or many other problems. Your doggy really needs to see the vet.

Coughing is one symptom of heart worm, you better have him checked a.s.a.p. It's treatable(with arsenic shots, the dog will probably have to spend some time in the animal clinic), not cheap and kind of risky, but my Golden went through it at age 2 and did just fine. Good luck.

if its been around any other animals it could have kennel cough which is very serious, seek a vet asap

Maybe heartworms or an allergy. Get the dog to the vet if it is heartworms this will kill your dog.
