Below is a site where you can peruse The Age of Reason. Below that is a place you can purchase the book.
Thomas Paine was an interesting fellow. It was probably the deist religious values he espoused in this book which caused most of his problems. In addition, he tended to be a little bit outspoken. Before the war that was great but after the war, he wasn't regarded all that highly.
There was no doubt he was a genius of some note, having held a patent on a bridge design and having worked with Fitch on the early steam engine design. Washington admired him so much that he gave his The Crisis credit for motivating him to capture Trenton and change the course of the war. later Paine blamed Washington for something or other and Paine never reconciled with Washington.
The real oddity of his life seems to have been that even after being invited back to the US from France in 1802, by Thomas Jefferson, then president, Jefferson would not see him. This is odd because Jefferson seems to have held deist views himself author of the Jefferson Bible, essentially the gospels with all the miracles removed.
When Paine died, the person who was greatly responsible for being the voice of the American Revolution was largely forgotten.
