That's weird. They always examine my eyes first and do the test then do the dialation.

This is not very common, usually they will do a quick check before dilation if they didn't do it with an automated machine. The drops that they can give you aren't just for looking at the back of the eye if they are doing a dilation afterwards. They are also relaxing your focusing (aka accommodation) so you aren't able to give false readings. With this they are able to get their own readings objectively also without you unknowingly focusing too hard. Dont get worried. They are not doing anything wrong, just getting the info in a different way
