I would suspect that the gears on the motor that turn the mechanism that raises and lowers the top is stripped or the shear pin is broken.

Find where this motor is... and expose it the best you can. Then have someone activate the top and you should see the gears between the motor and top mechanism moving. If the move.. then follow the devices that are moving to you get to the point where it doesn't move and you've found your problem.

If the gears on the motor don't move.. there is probably a 'set screw' or a 'shear pin' that is used to connect the gear to the motor shaft. Set screw can become loose allowing the shaft to spin in the gear. Shear pins are simply pins that 'stab through' the gear and shaft and will 'shear' or break if too much stress is required, thus breaking a cheap pin over breaking or bending a more expensive part.

Hope this helps and good luck!

If the motor hums, it means it probably doesn't know the words. Sorry, couldn't resist.

If you have undone all the clips and the top is free to move, it probably means the motor is frozen up, or is spinning but one of the gears has stripped its teeth. In either case, sounds like a trip to the repair shop is in order.

What you are saying and asking, is that if your top motor is not working ( I am guessing that is the case) and you are forcefully opening and closing the top, by hand then yes your dad is right it will eventually get stuck, since you are not putting equal force on the right and left side of the top, you will eventually bend the top frame and you are SOL. I would check the net for a top motor kit and replace it, since the frame is no longer made and you would need an engineering degree to fix that thing if you bend the frame

it is humming, so it is getting power, but there may be a connection from the motor that is broken or off like the bar that connects them. Find the motor and trace it back to the top, something inbetween is broken or not connected.

Sounds like the gear (or other drive mechanism) is either detached or broken. It will probably need to be taken apart to be repaired.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned hydraulic leak. I had a convertible top years ago that was hydraulic.

Not to be a smartaleck, but do you have hooks in the front that clip it closed? I know the older ragtops did..
