Minorities dominant in Phoenix
Tucson also joins census list of cities where non-Anglos make up majority

Minorities are now in the majority in Phoenix and Tucson, census data reveal.

The state's two largest cities experienced dramatic growth of their minority populations from 2000 to 2005, and a leading demographer said Monday that they can expect more of the same.

"It represents the new wave of urban growth for the West," said William Frey, an authority on population and migration trends for the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution. advertisement

"What used to be just a California experience is now spreading throughout the West."

Denver also ended 2005 with a minority population slightly larger than non-minorities.

With Phoenix, Tucson and Denver joining the ranks of minority-predominant cities, the list now includes 31 of the nation's largest 50 cities.

Among medium-size cities, Yuma and Avondale have had minority majorities since the 2000 census or earlier.

Valley professionals who deal with minority issues say that although minorities are not a homogeneous group, the new balance is good for communities in general.

"I hope people see it as a positive," said Conrado Gomez, an assistant clinical professor of education at Arizona State University Polytechnic. "It's just the way things are going to be."

Anita Luera, vice president of the Valle Del Sol behavioral health center and director of its 20-year-old leadership-development program aimed at Hispanics, said there is little fundamental difference between the two populations.

"People shouldn't be afraid of it," Luera said. "Minorities are the same as majorities in wanting to have better lives, schools, education and safer communities."

Gomez said the heightened minority numbers will be felt mostly in two areas: politics and education.

"More Hispanics and non-Whites will be going into politics. I hope people understand that's the American way," he said. Education will have to adjust, he added.

"What is studied in school also has to reflect that population so those students can see themselves in their studies," Gomez said.

"Minority" for statistical purposes means everyone except Whites who are not of Hispanic ancestry. This includes Native Americans, Blacks, Asians and Pacific Islanders, people who designate themselves "some other race" and the Hispanic ethnic group, regardless of race.

The latest figures are the product of a survey in which roughly one in every 40 households in the nation was contacted throughout 2005.

Although more than half of the residents within the city limits of Phoenix and Tucson are minorities, the predominance of Anglos in other communities gives Maricopa County a minority component of 38.8 percent and Pima County 41.9 percent.

The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all Maricopa and Pinal counties, is 38.9 percent minority.

The Valley city with the smallest proportion of minorities is Scottsdale, with 14.3 percent.

Minorities are one-third or less of the populations of Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Peoria, Surprise and Tempe.

Frey said that Arizona, more than other places, faces a sharp age difference in racial and ethnic components.

Minorities, with higher fertility rates, larger families and younger workers, are concentrated in the younger population, while many middle-age and senior residents are Anglos, he said.

"You have both a generation gap and cultural gap, so to speak," Frey said.

He said minorities who migrated en masse to California in the past decade, swelling its population to minority-majority status, are now heading inland, while more are coming to the West from other parts of this country and abroad.

"The marines did a little (exercise) just North of Idaho. One Hundred marines with three drones and two radar stations controlled 100 miles of the most rugged border you ever saw in your life. While I was there, just one week-end while I was there, they intercepted four people coming across on ATVs carrying four hundred pounds of drugs, we got a light plane trying to come in under the radar, and so it can happen. We can control our borders, we just choose not too."

Don't care about the race but illegal traffic can and will be stopped. Not impossible at all or costly.

If we properly staff our border patrols, build a wall, use sensors, remote controlled drones, and radar stations, we can slow the raging flood of illegal aliens coming over our border down to a trickle. It's not "impossible," in fact, it probably wouldn't even be all that difficult, we just haven't made the effort.

If I am reading that right they are saying the demographics are here to stay (arguable) and that therefor we should change our schools to teach what the most radical voices amongst our demographics want (ridiculous.)

We are a minority in the world, so I would assume that ultimately whites will be a minority here. However, I would also expect the other races to be made up more equally from the various races and ethnicities that want to come here. It is unfair to other countries, otherwise. That being the case, I don't assume Hispanics will ever be the majority, themselves.

"Minorities" doesn't mean hispanics. Say 60% are minorities, but only 30 % are Hispanics and 46% of those want America to be American. (This is a reasonable assumption given that 46% of Hispanics who voted voted in favor of Prop 200 to deny benefits to illegal immigrants.) That would mean about 17% wanted to 'change' the school program and 83% don't. So I think Mr. Gomez is a bit out of line.

To those pro-illegals above, we are not against Mexicans legally here under limited immigration rules that protect our schools and services, or against other LEGAL immigrants. However, illegal immigrants are budget busters and are seriously degrading our schools and services as a result. That is NOT ok.

I don't know where your going with this "Q." Usually I agree with you 100% on illegal immigration issues but this question sees to have a bit of a racist undertone. The Latino/Hispanic population has been projected to make up the largest ethnic group inside the US for years and I guess it is now fullfilling these expectations/predicitions. As long as the population increase isn't from illegal immigration, I could care less as to which "race" dominates the USA in terms of population. As long as our allegiance is first and foremost towards the US, American society and issues, American history and government, etc. over that of the "heritages," nationalities, cultures etc. of our ancestors who immigrated here, so be it. So now our "Great American Melting Pot" is going to have a more South of the Border "flavor" than before- so what? I enjoy things "spicey" and maybe this demographic of a new large, young Hispanic poulation will contribute new ideas, etc. to our culture just like every other "race" has done and is exactly what the US needs to maintain its' status and legacy as the greatest nation in the world.

Well, the ball's really going to end up being in the government's court, and I hope they're ready to explain how their years of gross negligence have now resulted in a foreign country gaining de-facto representation on Capitol Hill, because you can bet your last plug nickel that, once all these people have been 'naturalized' etc., that they'll be voting pro-Mexico every chance they get.
They're not stupid, unfortunately neither are they honest, and I anticipate things will get worse, not better until and UNless there's a mass migration southward, driven by cities and state governments deciding that it's time to act in an effective way, and also unless Congress decides to put up some legal and physical barriers to illegal entry into the United States. It's really up to them, the Minutemen did em a favor by putting it on the news, I guess, but ultimately it's really going to be governments' job to get the border closed/regulated effectively.

Minorities are already dominant in NYC
We have Hispanics, blacks, Asians, Muslim, Jews, etc. And many were born here.

But we aren't all running around like the world is coming to an end. Because reality check: ITS NOT. THERE ARE DIFFERENT RACES AND ETHNICITES IN THIS COUNTRY, WHITES SHOULDN'T BE THE ONLY MAJORITY, GET OVER IT!

Why would you want to stop it? People from other nations just make life more interesting!

The world is getting smaller and smaller, international travel is amazing! People are the spice of life. Everyone has different stories and different ways of being brought up. Knowing people from other nations opens your eyes to all kinds of other ideas, beliefs and ways of life.

I am Canadian, and I have always known that I never wanted to date another Canadian. I find other cultures too exciting and interesting to just stick with my own. I've been with my boyfriend for 4 years now and he is an immigrant and I wouldn't have it any other way. The things that we have done together and the people we have met because we are from a different culture is worth all the troubles we face being a mixed race and mixed religious couple.

I'm sorry, but america means minority. Everyone is a minority in one way or another, WHO CARES!!!!
You are not in England (land of white) or Africa (always been mostly black) or China (Asians) you are speaking of AMERICA the place where people come to escape racism, etc. Yes, people from England, Africa, Asia, and even Mexico. AMERICA the place where it is even okay to mix it up a bit and have mixed races. We are not called the melting pot for no reason. Embrace it! Don't be scared. we are all of the same HUMAN race. Different does not mean bad!

The British empire emptied their prisons and those people came to America, The Indigent people kept them from starving and freezing and was promptly repaid with diseases for which they had no immunity, Deviant anti social behavior, Alcohol, broken treaties, murder, theft of property and finally having to live on reservations.

Are you afraid of being repaid in kind?
I am sure in your mind you believe America is the better for this, So maybe America will be better after another social change?
Are you afraid of becoming a minority?
Can you say Karma boys and girls?
