I just caught my 16 month old son in the bathroom getting toilet paper, dipping it in tiolet water and then eating it. Is it bad and what should I do?

My son did the same thing at about the same age, I slapped his hand and told him no, that's yucky, you're naughty & I washed him up...needless to say I was very embarrassed, my husband brought a friend home from work, he picked up my son & I saw he still had paper in his mouth.
p.s.
I don't think my son was eating it, but sucking the water out of the paper he dipped...eeew, gross

What's done is done. You're not going to get his stomach pumped or anything. Inducing vomiting seems extreme. He'll probably have a more fibrous bowel movement than normal...maybe an upset stomach for a small bit. There's nothing you can do to sterilize him or his insides from the bathroom germs.....So, since he has found a new game it might be time to put up a little baby gate at the bathroom door, or a baby latch on the potty....but he still might try to eat the toilet paper. I vote for a baby gate. Good luck.

Don't feel bad, my little girl will be 2 in December and the toilet is still one of her favorite toys. It's hard for them to understand they can't play with "some" things. She used to take anything she could reach and dip it in the toilet or flush it. Money was the hardest to break, she loved to flush coins. the best thing is to keep the bathroom door shut and the toilet paper out of reach. Continue telling him no when you forget all the above. It's hard but it soon passes. Like the expensive toys they couldn't live without, they get bored with the toilet eventually too. :-)

Calm down! It is just one of the million things that kids will do! Not to worry! Try feeding him regularly! LOL!! You just have to teach him that he should only put things in his mouth that you approve of or give to him! If you haven't started toilet training, you might want to start getting him acquainted with the bathroom fixtures and let him know what is "YUCKY!" I'm sorry, but I am amused by this, as you should be (you'll laugh later!), because I have seen much worse done by toddlers ( especially if they're still wearing diapers) and this is minor! They'll put lots of things in their mouths and yes, they can be quite creative! Lighten up and laugh (just don't let him see you ;-) Guide him gently! Good luck! You'll be okay! As for his health, if there is any damage done, he will exhibit symptoms and you can deal with it accordingly. I doubt if there will be any! As some answers have already indicated, toilet bowls and the water in them are a lot cleaner than you think!

LOL. It's not a good thing but it shouldn't hurt him if he didn't eat too much, toilet paper is made to break down so it should go right through his system. Watch him for the next day or so to make sure he has a bowel movement, if he doesn't you might want to give your Doctor a call to see what they have to say.
Should be okay though.

P.S. Keep the bathroom door closed at all times.
Put a door knob guard on it if he can open it. Bathrooms can be dangerous for little ones.

It is bad but it isn't abnormal. Most toddlers have their incident with the toilet around potty training time. It's fine. Let him know what the toilet is used for and try to keep the door closed. I think of it like this: you take them to the pool and let them dip their hands in, you take them to the ocean and do the same. Why wouldn't a child try it out? They just don't know. Give him time and talk to him about it.

Relax!!!! Kids that age don't understand germs or microbes. Kids are curious by nature and will do what we feel are odd things but in fact if you look outside the box, are rather complex thought processes. He was probably fascinated that the paper absorbed water and at that age everything goes in the mouth. He may also be telling you he is getting ready for potty training time. Try showing him what the potty is for. Just trust your own judgment it is usually the best way to go. You gave birth to him, you do know him best!!! Good Luck

Keep the bathroom door CLOSED when you have a toddler in the house. If he was only dipping toilet paper in the water and eating it (which shouldn't be a problem if you keep your bathroom clean- same water in your loo is same water from your tap), the no big issue.

HOWEVER! Your baby, allowed access to the bathroom, toilet seat lid is evidently not closed, your baby could have fallen head first into the water and drowned!! Please keep the door to the loo closed!

I have a 15 month old daughter who does the same EXACT thing. This is what i do....When i catch her doing it i smack her hand and get down to her level and tell her "NO NO" in a stern voice and take her out of the bathroom. I usually try to keep the door closed when i can, that helps bc they can't go in there in the first place, ya know? As long as there wasn't "nasty" stuff in the toilet i dont think he will get sick from it. He will be ok. :)

They can tell you if all he did was disgusting or if it's something you need to do something about.
You can buy clips to keep the toilet seat closed. If you make the toilet paper so it rolls under, it will be more difficult for him to play with it.
Begin to teach him the phrase "Not food" by saying it firmly with a toy, bringing it close to your mouth and saying "Not food." Do it with other obvious items. He will understand and be amused because he's old enough to understand jokes.
