True. Spaniards colonized the most part of South America, the Centralamerican region and the south of what today is USA. Also a several countries, provinces and islands around the world. That's why Spanish language is today the first language in those countries.
In my opinion - though Chinese, technically speaking, is the no. 1 language in the world today (because there is more than 1 billion people in China), it'll be a long time before it becomes the international language. There just isn't that many Chinese people around the world - they're mainly located in one country, no matter how big it is. You just don't need to speak it anywhere else, and they most certainly don't expect you to speak it when visiting China - although that wouldn't be too bad :-))

In commerce, probably, though there are people now who say that Chinese is worth learning.
