The vets have a medication that you put on them. Don't use motor oil, it will clog the dogs skin pores.

In dogs with very mild, localized, small skin lesions some veterinarians do not treat the dog at all. Other veterinarians will always treat a Demodex lesion with topical medications appropriate as an insecticide. (Some home remedies are harmful so always consult with your veterinarian about any kind of skin lesion and the safest and most effective therapy.) These organisms are live parasites so applying such remedies as Vitamin E cream or aloe vera will have no effect on them.

It is vitally important that all dogs (not just dogs with health problems) be consuming a high quality, meat-based diet with proper amounts of high quality fat. Any dog, especially a growing pup, that is consuming a cheap, grain-based diet will not fare as well as the dog eating a high quality diet. In general, the better diets are higher in price so do not let your decision about what to feed your dog be dictated by the cost. The nutritional aspects of skin disorders is an often overlooked "treatment" and should always be considered when a health impacting situation is present. For good information about nutrition, visit this department for a list of articles.

Mitaban was a commonly used treatment for Demodex and had a proven record of successes. This prescription-only product is diluted with water and applied to the dog's skin according to the product directions. Repeated applications are almost always required. This product may no longer be available. On occasion a veterinarian may decide to use a product called Ivermectin. This product must be very carefully calculated regarding dosages that are effective and not toxic. The use of Ivermectin in treating Demodex needs to be discussed with the owner prior to use since it has not been labeled for use against Demodex. Another treatment that is sometimes used is oral milbemycin given daily for six to eight weeks. Lime-Sulphur dips have been used in the past and some veterinarians continue to prefer this therapy for demodex. Ivermectin in fairly high doses is also used... with owner's consent and with caution!

There is a cure for mange, but it does not involve motor oil! That is some kind of old time, retard remedy and it does not work and will only cause harm.

First you need to find of what kind of mange your dog has because there are two types. Simply because he looks "mangy" doesn't mean he has mange.

Second, take your dog to a vet to determine if and what kind of mange your dog has and let the vet prescribe the correct treatment.

Geeeesh....your friend probably thinks that feeding a dog gun powder will make him mean too!

Our clinic once treated a dobie whose owner thought the correct way to rid the dog of ticks was to douse the dog in gasoline and set a match to each tick! Yeah...it rid the dog of ticks, but also gave him 1st degree burns over much of his body! Don't believe in old fashioned remedies!

DEMIDECTIC MANGE:

Mange mites are microscopic bugs that live in the skin of your pet. Demodex mange mites live in the hair follicles of your pet. They can be present in small numbers in normal pets and the immune system keeps them in check. In pets with stressed immune systems, the mites may be able to multiply and thereby cause clinical disease.

Currently, we treat mange with the topical dip called "Mitaban". This drug has been approved for this purpose and is effective in approximately 75-80% of the cases. The dip must be applied to the pet after a medicated bath with a shampoo that opens the follicles on the coat. The dip is a potent drug and may cause the following side effects:

Most dogs need from 5 to 8 dips given at 1-week intervals in order to clear the disease. We usually will recheck the pet after 4 dips with a skin scraping to see if the mites are still present. Once it is determined that the mites are gone, 2 more dips are given to be certain they are all dead. In addition to the Mitaban dips, the pet's immune system is addressed.

There are several treatments for mange mites and usually they’re quite effective. Your veterinarian will prescribe one of them (sometimes a dip, spray or creme) with perhaps an antibiotic and positive results should appear inside 7 days.

Ivermectin, known to farmers for a long time as a dewormer has become a successful treatment for many dogs however a few breeds such as Collies and Shelties do not respond well to it.

YOU MUST VISIT THE VETERINARY FOR MANGE AS ONLY APPROVED MEDICATION CAN REVERSE THESE EFFECTS.

No...do not use motor oil!!!! There are several products on the market for mange. However, I simply buy sulphur powder from the pharmacy and mix it well with either cod liver oil. Have cured many a stay dog with this mixture. Also this does not harm the dog if he licks the area.

DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL! Yes, I'm shouting at you not to do it.
Your friend is trying to help, but this is not a good thing to do.
Mange is a skin infection, take the dog to the vet who will give you what you need.
Are you sure it isn't a hot spot caused by fleas? The vet will help with that too, if it is.

Motor oil will kill him. Go to a place like petco and get some medicated shampoo or ask a vet what they recommend.
