Does Baking Soda clean teeth well? And does Baking Soda take the protecting layer off teeth? Basically, is baking soda safe to use all the time for teeth?

I use baking soda on my tooth brush every morning before using my toothpaste and rinse. For me, it keeps down the stains from tobacco and coffee. My dentist has never said anything to me about my teeth while using it. I got a compliment once after smoking for 20+ yrs, when my daughter was in for a visit a few years back when I made a comment about going outside to take a smoke. He was surprise by it and said "I would have never had guessed it" that I had great looking teeth and mentioned that most smokers teeth are yellowish but minds wasn't. So, I guess I must be doing something right.
As far as taking off the protecting layer, I never heard of this. If you have doubts about it, consult your dentist.

This is a question you should probably ask your dentist to be sure. There are many comercial toothpastes that include baking soda. There are many people that say baking soda can whiten your teeth but I have not read any studies that prove it. Baking soda does change the pH in your mouth and therefore can inhibit the growth of bacteria (which is why we brush anyway). It moderation I don't see how it could hurt.

My dentist said that it will scratch off the enamel and that the whitening strips or products like listerine whitening rinse are the safest less abrasive products to whiten teeth.
