Sparta was a city-state in ancient Greece. They were basically a landlocked state with an incredibly fearsome army that trained its children in warfare from about the age of 6 or 7. Your school probably used a spartan as a mascot because they are the shining example of strength and ferocity.

Although it probably wasn't used in this context it could mean a very basic person. A person who lives a spartan lifestyle likes to live without any luxuries.

Sparta is a city in Greece.

'Spartan' is often used to describe a type of lifestyle characterized by plain & simple living, without need for complicated surroundings or decoration. A common expression used to describe the way of life is a 'Spartan existence"

In olden days it was a very powerful city and was very militaristic with a great interest in atheltics and other pursuits which celebrated the body. Children were often left outside to die if they were considered to be not strong enough.

The modern definition of Spartan is bare, plain, even uncomfortably sparse.

The "Spartan" your school refers to is no-doubt the legendary warriors of ancient Sparta (near modern Greece), renowned for their skill and fierceness on the battlefields. They wore skirts of leather flaps, upper body armor, distinctive helmets that covered most of their faces with a Mohawk-like plume on top and carried small, circular shields that were also used as blunt weapons.

Considered unstoppable in their glory years, they were finally defeated and all but wiped-out by superior enemy use of archers (Spartans liked hand-to-hand combat and thought the arrow was the weapon of cowards and sissys).

The reason we use the word "spartan" today the way we do arises from the fact that these ancient soldiers were known to get by on as little as they could, avoiding all luxury as it was considered an indulgence of the weak.

You could read Homer's Iliad. Or watch the movie Troy. Or find a copy of "The 300 Spartans".

Better yet, look it up in an encyclopedia, or even Wikipedia.

You have to learn to use those resources if you hope to graduate.
