Give him some time to get used to you,
When I brought my Parakeet home he would stay on one side of the cage until i showed him food in my hand, and even at that point he wouldnt eat it, abotu a week later though he got so hungry he didnt really care where it was and started eating off my hand. I think they go through stress and shock when their being moved from place to place and are trying to adjust to a new home and enviornment.

The best thing you could do for the little guy is get another parakeet. He is very lonely. Another thing I do is let him eat off the floor of his cage. You should try to feed with a mixture of seed and water. I usually cut off a drinking straw, and shape the end of the straw like the beak of a bird. Dip the straw into the mixture and he will eagerly eat that way. I have been one of the few parakeet breeders in my city. So I know how to feed the young. If the bird is really young, you can grind the seeds into a fine powder and then mix it with warm water. Then use the straw method. Get him well nourished and then purchase a cage partner for him. You can tell what sex he is, by the color of his cere, which is located right above the beak. If it is light blue, then it is a male and if it is a light pinkish, cream color then it is a female. Gotta make him/her eat soon, as they could die. Good Luck.

It's pretty normal for a new budgie not to eat for up to 24 hours - Move slowly around the cage and let him adjust to his new home. Don't try to get him out yet. If the food dishes have covers on them remove them for now. If he goes too long without eating -- if you're feeding seeds you'll see some empty hulls in the dish even if you don't see him eat -- then it may be a good idea to have him checked out by a vet.

When you purchase a new parakeet, they go through a lot of stress. Sometimes this stress causes them to get sick. Parakeets go down (get sick) really quick. You need to first call the store or breeder where your got him and tell them your problem. You don't have much time so do it quick. If you have an eye dropper, try giving it a few drops of water. He might be very young and hasn't been weaned yet but my bet is, he's sick. Good luck.

Don't worry, this is normal behavior for parakeets. When i got my 1st one, it didn't eat. In a few days it will get used to its new home and eat. They won't starve themselves if food is availabe. This is really nothing to really be worried about!
PS I was scared out of my mind when my 1st one wouldn't eat. I went so far, to take her to the vet, JUST to be told, Its normal! Hope I helped!

Well, for one the bird should see the vet regardless if its sick or not when you get it. Its called a "well bird checkup" your bird could be sick, but it sounds like it is just adjusting to its new home. Still, take it to the vet in the next week or so.

The bird is under "shock" / very afraid of its new surroundings. In the pet store it was in a flock; now she is alone ! You should always have at least TWO parakeets.
