I have had my cat for 9 years, and he has never had a problem with going potty outside of his litter box. He has always had a high level of anxiety, but since I got married in the spring, he has been more anxious than ever. He has starting urinating on my husbands shoes, clothes, or anything left out in the open. But never my things. I have taken him to the vet, and he is physically healthy. I have tried giving him extra attention, and spending more time with him. I have also tried Feliway to help him relax, but nothing seems to be working. Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior?

Although I'm inclined to be "flip" and say "get rid of the husband - after all he hates your cat, and the cat was there first!" let's try to make everyone happy (hopefully).

A new person has come into your life; in addition to hating your cat (something I really don't like), your hubbie is taking your attention away. The cat is most definitely being territorial.

If he's not neutered, by all means, try this first. I suspect however the answer is not that simple.

Your husband has to find a way to bond with this cat. You can help by letting him read some of the excellent answers here, and explain to him that your cat will probably ALWAYS return the feelings in kind! I agree that he should make the effort to befriend your kitty. Have hubby feed him, give him treats, play with him. Find an interactive toy (like those with feathers on the end of a wand) that your cat enjoys, and let hubby play with him. Hopefully, in the process they will BOTH bond with each other. Your kitty will now have TWO loyal servants, not just one! Lol. He'll appreciate that. Also in the process your new husband will begin to appreciate the intelligence and love of a cat.

Other suggestions such as Feliway are probably worth a try, although I've never had any luck with that.

It's up to YOU to help them form a truce! Your cat is not young anymore & would probably have trouble adjusting to a new home (if you could even find one). Hopefully, your husband can find it in his heart to understand your kitty's behavior and forgive him. I wouldn't like it if a cat singled ME out to piss on, would you?

Best of Luck - hope it works out!

I know it's not a help but my husband hated a cat I had years ago and the cat would always drag my husbands socks into the litter box and poop on them.

I finally had to find the cat another home. We had tried everything to get the cat to stop but it wouldn't.

Your cat is just being territorial. Your new hubby has moved into his space. So he is going around spraying everything the hubby smells like to cover up hubby's scent with his own. The best bet would be for hubby to start 'pretending' to like the cat. Maybe pet him, feed him treats that the cat loves and only have him give them out. This way, the cat will start to associate that hubby is not a threat, and start liking him. Maybe then, he'll stop spraying becasue he won't feel the competition.

Had a simular problem years ago, I'm assuming your male cat isn't fixed.....if I'm wrong then nevermind the rest of this answer. But in case I'm not, untill he is fixed he will continue to do so. I had the same problem, (actually found it amusing) but then after my son was born the cat urinated his bassenette!! YUCK!! Needless to say I threw out everything & poor Mr. Silvester (name of cat) had an apointment with the vet! Hope this helps if not ....srry

My vet put one of my cats on diazapam for the same reason and it has worked great. He has always had high anxiety and then started to pee outside of the litter box. He now uses the litter box and is very calm.

You can't stop the behavior , your cat does not like your husband. Your cat can sense what your husband feels about him. You need to get rid of the husband or the cat.

Cats know when people don't like them, and pay special attention to the ones that don't. For instance, my cat loves me to death, but she only comes for a pet when she wants. On the other hand, my uncle absolutely hates cats, and she walks right up to him and walks in and out between his legs.
Talk to your husband about why he hates your cat, is it that he hates all cats, has this one done something to him? Theres usually an underlying reason to why somebody dislikes cats/dogs/other animals. Try to get your husband to bond with your cat. Chances are its not too late to mend the relationship, cats are normally very forgiving.

The cat is jealous and his territory has been invaded by someone who he has to share you with. He is also marking his territory and re-establishing ownership of the house and everything in it. You can make the cat an outdoor cat or face the reality that there can be but one dominant male in the house.

has the cat been neutored? sometimes that helps with that kind of behavior. You probably are going to have to catch the cat in the act and scold it everytime. I have a female cat that will pee in places other than her litter box and we put her outside for a wihile if we ever catch her peeing where she isn't suppsoe to.
